Printing To a Thermal Printer
|
UPS.com supports printing to several makes and models of thermal printers. To make sure you are using a compliant printer, please select the link below.
For Windows® users (without Google Chrome): The following
steps should be followed when setting-up your thermal label printer for printing
labels for UPS Internet or CampusShip shipping from a Windows PC:
- Download and install the UPS thermal printer drivers (link below)
- Enable the UPS Printer Applet (recommended) or download and install the
Printer Plug In (Active X Control)
- Set your browser's pop-up blocker to accept pop-up windows from UPS.com. UPS
Internet Shipping and CampusShip use pop-up windows to display labels for
printing
For Mac® users or Windows Google Chrome users: The following
steps should be followed when setting-up your thermal label printer for printing
labels for UPS Internet or CampusShip shipping from a Mac:
- Install your thermal printer
- Enable the UPS Printer Applet
- Set your browser's pop-up blocker to accept pop-up windows from UPS.com. UPS

If using a Windows® operating system without the Google Chrome browser, to print with an Eltron or Zebra thermal printer you must install the drivers provided below; the driver provided with your printer will not work with UPS Internet Shipping or CampusShip. If you are using a different thermal printer, use the drivers that came with your printer and do not install the UPS Thermal Printer Drivers.
Note: Do not plug your printer into the computer until instructed to do so below.
The following instructions will help you download and install the UPS Thermal Printer drivers to your selected directory.
- Turn off the printer.
- Select the Download the UPS Thermal Printer Drivers link below.
- You may see one or more of the following windows based on your operating system and security settings; take the action listed for each window:

- Select Unzip to extract the files. Once files are extracted, select the appropriate buttons to close the window.
- Right-click the Start menu and choose Explore or Open Windows Explorer, then navigate to C:\UPS Drivers and double-click the file setup.exe to start the Installation Utility.
- You may see one or more of the following windows based on your operating system and security settings; take the action listed for each window:

- Connect the printer to your computer and turn on the printer power; wait for the green light to turn on indicating the printer is ready.
- The thermal printer is now installed; set up your thermal printer using the instructions in the printer guide.
- If the Found New Hardware wizard appears; click Cancel and do not install the software.
- See below for instructions to use the UPS Printer Applet or to install the plugin or ActiveX control.

The UPS Thermal printer applet supports printing to a thermal printer from your Mac if it meets the following requirements:
- You must have Mac OS X 10.6 or higher; you can check this by clicking the Apple logo at the top left of your screen and clicking About This Mac from the menu.
- You must have version 1.4.2 or later of Java installed on your PC; you can check your version at http://www.java.com.
- Connect the printer to the Mac via USB
- Turn the printer on and make sure the light on the top is a steady green
- Open Safari and type 'http://localhost:631' into the Address Bar
**If prompted for login info, enter the ID/Password of an Admin account for the computer**
- Select the Administration tab and click, 'Add Printer'
- Select the appropriate local printer and then 'Continue'
- Remove the pre-populated entries in the fields and then enter one of the following based on the printer make/model:
- Name = ZebraPrinter (for Zebra ZP 450 or S4M) UPSPrinter (for UPS Thermal Printers) Samsung Printer (for the Samsung SRP - 770).
- Description = Zebra Printer / UPS Thermal Printer / Samsung Thermal Printer in accordance to the name entered.
- Location = Human Readable Location (e.g. My Mac mini) - This is whatever the customer wants it to be.
- Click 'Continue'
- Click 'Select Another Make/Manufacturer'
- Select 'Raw' then click 'Continue'
- Select 'Raw Queue (en)' and click 'Add Printer'
- Click 'Set Default Options' and wait for the page to refresh
- Click the Administration tab at the top of the screen
- Click 'Add Class'
- Enter a Name, Description, Location and select the Members:

- Description = Zebra Printer Class, UPS Printer Class or Samsung Printer Class
- Location = This must be the same as entered in step 6C (Location Name)
- Members = Click on the name of the printer in the box to select it
- Click 'Add Class'
- After clicking "Add Class" you will see a confirmation page
- The thermal printer is now installed; set up your thermal printer using the instructions in the printer guide. Install your labels and connect the power and printer cables
- Set your browser's pop-up blocker to accept pop-up windows from UPS.com. UPS Internet Shipping and CampusShip use pop-up windows to display labels for printing
- Follow the instructions to the UPS Thermal Printer Applet

| The UPS Thermal printer applet supports printing to any supported thermal printer model from any browser or operating system. To use the applet you must have version 1.4.2 or later of Java installed on your PC. You can check your version at http://www.java.com. |

Note: The applet is currently in Beta; this means that it is still in the testing stage prior to the official product release. As an alternative, you may choose to install the plugin or Active X control.
To use the UPS Thermal Printer Applet:
- Install the UPS Thermal Printer Driver
- Log in to ups.com
- Mouse over the Shipping menu at the top of the page and select Set Preferences
Note: If you are a CampusShip user, click the My Settings button and select Edit Shipping Preferences
- Select View/Edit in the Quantum View Notify section
- In the E-mail message field, enter the following text exactly: ~UPSPrinterApplet~
Note: Entering this text will cause thermal labels to be printed using the applet; this text will not appear in any Quantum View notifications you send while shipping, and you may still enter Quantum View message text.
- Select Update
- Select View/Edit in the Printing Preferences section
- Check the box "Use my UPS thermal printer to print labels" and click Update
- Select Print a Sample Label to test your printer setup
- The first time you print a label, you may see one or more of the following windows. Take the action listed in the table below:

| Troubleshooting: |
- If no label popup window appears, make sure popups from UPS.com are allowed by your browser.
- If you do not have version 1.4.2 or later of Java, no label will print and you must install an update version of Java, which can be downloaded at www.java.com.
- If you have the correct version of Java, clear your browser's temporary internet files.

How To Install the UPS Thermal Printer Plug In or ActiveX® Control for Windows
|
Follow these instructions if you have already installed the UPS Thermal Printer driver and will not be using the UPS Printer Applet. Please note that the Applet is recommended.
If any of the following apply to you, you must print using the UPS Printer Applet:
- Windows® 7 or later
- Windows® Vista 64 bit
- Mac computer
- Google Chrome browser
The following instructions will help you download and install the UPS Thermal Printer plugin or ActiveX control. The installer automatically detects the browsers on your systems and downloads the appropriate plugin or control for each browser.
- Click the "Download" link below.
- The file download window appears. Click the "Run" button. Allow the files to transfer. Do not click the "Cancel" button.
- You may see a few additional windows based on your operating system and security settings. If the "Windows Security" window or "Driver Compatibility" window appears, select "Install this software anyway" or "Continue Anyway." If the "Program Compatibility" window appears, select "This program installed correctly."
- The InstallShield Wizard appears. Click the "Next" button and follow the prompts.
- The thermal printer is now installed; set up your thermal printer using the instructions in the printer guide. Install your labels and connect the power and printer cables.
- Set your pop-up blocker to accept pop-up windows from UPS.com. UPS Internet Shipping and CampusShip use pop-up windows to display labels for printing.
- Close all browser windows and reopen your browser.
- Log in to ups.com
- Mouse over the Shipping menu at the top of the page and select Set Preferences
Note: If you are a CampusShip user, click the My Settings button and select Edit Shipping Preferences.
- Select View/Edit in the Printing Preferences section.
- Check the box "Use my UPS thermal printer to print labels" and click Update.
- Select View/Edit in the Quantum View Notify section.
- In the E-mail message field, enter the following text exactly:
~UPSPrinterPlugin~
- Process a shipment or reprint a label from shipping history to test your printer.
