Additional Handling

Additional Handling charges occur when shipments exceed criteria stated in our UPS Terms and Conditions of Service/Carriage. Those criteria include:

  • A package with the longest side exceeding 48 inches or second-longest side exceeding 30 inches.
  • A shipment where the average weight per package is greater than 70 pounds or packages over 70 pounds with the weight not specified on the source document or the UPS automated shipping system used.
  • A package that is not fully encased in corrugated cardboard. Any cylindrical-like item, such as a barrel, drum, pail or tire, that is not fully encased in a corrugated cardboard shipping container

In order to avoid Additional Handling charges after manifesting the shipment to UPS, the correct package weight and dimensions must be entered in the appropriate UPS shipping system and “Additional Handling” should be indicated when processing the shipment.

If your package is not fully encased in a corrugated cardboard shipping container and you are shipping on ups.com or UPS CampusShip®, you should select the checkbox for “Additional Handling” in the “What are you shipping?” section after entering your package information (number, type, dimensions, etc.).

Note: Both ups.com shipping and CampusShip allow you to enter the package dimensions – which will also select Additional Handling, if applicable.

If shipping in UPS WorldShip®, enter the correct package dimensions in the “Details” tab or you may also manually select “Additional Handling” by following these steps:

  1. Go to the “Options” tab.
  2. Select “Additional Handling” in the “Package Options” section when creating a new shipment

Making these updates will help avoid additional fees for your shipment after manifesting to UPS.
