Top 5 moving hacks for college students

There’s a lot to do before the first day of college, and we’re here to help you get ready for it. From setting up your new dorm to getting to know the area, there are many ways to make the big college move easier than ever.

Tip 1 - Ship online orders direct to your campus

If you’re planning to shop for clothes or college books online, save yourself the hassle and ship them directly to your new campus. You’ll minimize the number of things you have to pack and move yourself and, if you get a subscription to Shoprunner, you can save with free 2-day shipping.

Tip 2 - Ship clothes ahead

Consider shipping lightweight items like clothes straight to your new campus to reduce your inflight luggage or back of the car bulk before your road trip.

What's the cheapest way to ship clothes? The cost of shipping will depend on several factors, from your shipping destination to how quickly you need your shipment to arrive. UPS Ground is generally the one of the most cost-effective UPS shipping methods for non-urgent deliveries in the United States.

UPS's Calculate Time & Cost tool will display all your options for getting your shipment of clothes to its destination safely and on-time, with pricing that automatically updates as you input your details. Next, use a UPS Drop Box, or head to The UPS Store® location.

Inside Tip - Your new dorm might be tight on clothing space. Before you leave for school, pack your seasonal clothes and have someone ready to ship them to you later in the semester.

Tip 3 - Pack smart

When it comes time to pack your boxes, a key step is to fold your clothes neatly to ensure they arrive in excellent condition.

To fold shirts, lay them flat and smooth on a clean, dry surface. Place the shirt front side down and fold the sides into the middle. Then fold the length of the shirt in three, so the front of the shirt sits on top. Stack the shirts neatly on top of one another and ensure the box is not much larger than the shirts, to avoid sliding in transit.

To fold pants or jeans, ensure they are smooth and lay them flat on a clean surface such as a table or counter. Fold the pants in half lengthwise and smooth them down, then proceed to fold the pants three or four times, smoothing and flattening as you go. Ensure that the box is adequate to hold the weight of the garments you're mailing. Use bubble wrap or other suitable packing material to prevent the clothing from sliding around in transit.

Inside Tip - Pack delicate items in with your clothes to ship with built in padding. Just ensure that all sides of the item are contained by clothes and away from any edges.

Tip 4 - Ship delicate items

Whether you’re planning a potentially bumpy road trip or you’re flying across the country, pack the most delicate items and let UPS transport them for you. Planning to ship your laptop? Take a look at our How to Ship a Laptop instructions to ensure it arrives safely.

For total peace of mind, track your shipment on its way. Explore express shipping options to reduce total time in transit and help reduce the risk of delays.

Tip 5 - Find your nearest UPS location

Need a secure place to send and receive packages? Find a UPS Drop Box, The UPS Store, or a UPS Access Point® location close to campus. You’ll enjoy peace of mind knowing that your incoming items are waiting for you in a safe location.
