UPS was founded in 1907 as a local messenger service in Seattle called American Messenger Company. The services offered were quite a bit different than today's. Couriers didn't deliver packages, but messages, trays of food from restaurants, and even baggage.
Whether they were the early messenger boys or our current day drivers, delivery personnel are the face of the company.
American Messenger Company became Merchants Parcel Delivery in 1913. The company began using the name United Parcel Service in 1919 and issued its first official uniform three years later, seen on the drivers in the 1922 photo below. UPS introduced the iconic, fully brown uniform three years later in 1925 which featured an Eisenhower style jacket and Pershing or police style cap. It remained virtually unchanged and the standard uniform for nearly 50 years. You can see it pictured in both the 1955 and 1968 images.
Short sleeves, pictured in the 1971 photo, were first offered around 1968. Baseball caps were also offered at this time. The uniform would remain essentially the same until 1991, when UPS introduced shorts.
While the UPS browns have changed through the years, the commitment to customers has not. The policies of customer service, reliability, and round-the-clock service set forth by the founders in 1907 guide UPS--even today.
