How to ship golf clubs

A golf bag filled with golf clubs sits on a lush green golf course.

If you’ve flown anywhere with your golf clubs, you know what a hassle it can be. Large items like golf travel bags are often the last to be delivered to baggage claim. And even after your clubs arrive, you’ll need to find a rental car or taxi that’s big enough to transport your bag to the hotel.

There’s a much easier way to get your clubs delivered to your destination and ready for that first round on the course. Just package them up and ship ahead with UPS.

Five steps to prepare your golf clubs for shipping

The friendly staff at The UPS Store has the expertise to pack and ship just about anything. For shipping golf clubs, they recommend you take the following five steps.

  1. Select a new, sturdy box. For shipments over 40 pounds, you should use a 275# burst strength box as noted on the Manufacturer’s Certification Stamp, usually printed on the bottom of the box. You can find this type of box at The UPS Store.
  2. Wrap each of your golf clubs individually with two layers of bubble wrap. Then place the clubs inside your golf travel bag.
  3. When you place your golf bag in the shipping box, use more bubble wrap or inflatable air cushioning as void fill inside the box. Do not use paper or other filler material, as it does not provide adequate cushioning for items over 10 lbs.
  4. Make sure you have at least two inches of cushioning on all sides of the bag so the contents are snug and do not shift inside the box.
  5. Use packaging tape to securely seal the box at all seams. Do not use duct, masking or any other kind of tape.

You may want to take a few other steps to protect your longest clubs—the drivers—since their height makes them the most susceptible to being damaged. First, you can put head covers on them for protection. Then you can add an adjustable travel bag support rod, usually made of aluminum, that will stick up higher than the drivers and absorb any impact.

The good news is, you don’t have to handle all of this yourself. There’s a team of experts in your neighborhood that can help get your treasured clubs packed and shipped just right.
