With a GDP of $1.36 trillion, Spain is the 14th largest economy in the world and the fifth largest in Europe.
While Spain’s primary industries include tourism, manufacturing, agriculture, energy and electricity, the automotive industry is one of the largest employers in the country, and in fact the second largest car manufacturer in Europe.
There are many reasons why Spain is an attractive and accessible export opportunity for British small businesses: it represents a major investment sector for the UK as British companies are responsible for around 240,000 direct and indirect jobs, and the country is home to the largest British-born population in Europe.
Migration from the UK to Spain has soared since the 90s: in 2017 almost 250,000 Brits called Spain their permanent home. Spaniards are becoming increasingly familiar with British products – not only is Spain among the top 15 importers from the UK, bilateral trade of goods and services exceed £40 billion every year.
As of 1st January 2021, shipments to Spain require a commercial invoice and other export documentation as they must clear customs like any other export shipment. More information on clearing customs is available further down this page, you can also refer to the EU Trade Helpdesk as your guide to import rules and taxes in European markets.

The first thing you need to know is that your shipment to Spain is considered an international shipment. Due to your parcels crossing country borders, you will be classified as an exporter and since Brexit has come into effect on 1st January 2021, a shipment to Spain is treated the same as any worldwide shipment. Meaning the shipment must clear customs and requires additional documentation such as a commercial invoice and may be subject to additional export fees and duties. You will also need an Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number, which is used to track and register customs information in the EU.
