Major lab logistics enhancements launched to streamline operations and better support specimen shipping
What's New?
UPS Healthcare® Lablink is an enhanced digital dashboard on the UPS customer portal — empowering labs using UPS Pickup Point locations with self-serve capabilities such as linking specimens to tracking, self-activation of enhanced shipment history, and printing return service labels.
Why It Matters:
UPS Healthcare Lablink strengthens the digital connection between central laboratories and their clinics, enhancing operational efficiency through greater visibility and streamlined specimen management.

UPS Healthcare has announced the launch of UPS Healthcare Lablink a new digital dashboard on UPS.com designed to strengthen connections between central laboratories and their clinics. UPS Healthcare Lablink introduces several new features to simplify lab operations and provide more self-serve options to collection sites:
- UPS Healthcare Lablink links Specimen to Shipment: Clinics and hospitals can now link specimen IDs to UPS 1Z tracking numbers for each lab shipment, either manually or via file upload. This capability enables specimen-level visibility for central labs, helping them better plan staffing and equipment needs.
- Activate UPS Premier Gold: Lab clinics can activate their own UPS Premier Gold tags for their shipments. UPS Premier gives critical specimens priority lane shipping, live monitoring, and proactive risk mitigation. Customers must have an active UPS Premier Gold contract or enable the service.
Coming later in 2025:
- Print UPS Return® labels: Clinics and hospitals gain the ability to self-generate return shipment labels through the dashboard, improving flexibility, speed, and visibility.
- Enhanced History Log: Collection sites now have a dedicated view of shipment status—including open, completed, and delayed shipments—within the UPS® Pickup Point site.
UPS Smart Pickup® Services Expand Further Into Europe
In addition to the launch of UPS Healthcare Lablink, UPS Healthcare announced the expansion of UPS Smart Pickup services to 10 additional European countries by the end of June 2025: Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden. UPS Smart Pickup allows lab customers to request a UPS driver at least one hour before a desired pick-up time, ensuring drivers only arrive when packages are ready to ship—helping laboratories operate more efficiently and sustainably. UPS Smart Pickup is also available in the United States, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom.
Clinical laboratories worldwide are facing increasing demands, processing millions of specimens annually. For example, Mayo Clinic Laboratories receives about 40,000 samples daily from more than 70 countries.¹ This level of operation highlights the critical need for streamlined, connected logistics.
The introduction of UPS Healthcare Lablink and the expansion of UPS Smart Pickup into additional European countries enhances UPS Healthcare’s existing capabilities. These developments strengthen our mission to provide smarter logistics solutions that meet the evolving needs of laboratories, clinics, and healthcare providers globally.
