Aside from brackets, basketball, and screaming fans, what comes to mind when it's time to cheer on your favorite team in the Final Four?
Did you ever stop and think about the court?
From the tip-off at a freshly-painted center court to the free throws tossed behind brightly-colored guides, to the squeaking of new shoes on the wood as a player makes a fast break, that's where all of the excitement of the tournament originates. Think of how many wins, losses, upsets, and historical moments have taken place on a Final Four court.
Building the Stage for the Final Four
Connor Sports Flooring thinks about that court every year. The team at Connor carefully crafts the Final Four floor by hand, selecting nothing less than the best grade of maple, and thoughtfully checking their work to ensure there are no knots or blemishes on the surface. It's no wonder that Connor is the exclusive supplier of the championship floor for both the men's and women's NCAA® Final Four.
It takes approximately six weeks to produce the floor, including two weeks to build it then four weeks to sand, paint, and finish. After safe transport to the tournament's destination, it takes eight to 10 people between two and-a-half and three and-a-half hours to install the floor.
The Final Four Floor Goes on Tour
Last year, Connor and the NCAA trusted UPS Freight® to take the tournament centerpiece on a multi-state promotional tour from the Connor Sports mill in Michigan to the Final Four in New Orleans. UPS Freight moved the floor in a dedicated 53-foot dry van wrapped with Final Four decals, and put it under the watch and leadership of Phil Wolske, a UPS Freight Truckload Driver with nearly 20 years of accident-free driving.
Wolske took the floor on scheduled stops to UPS facilities and universities, exciting sports fans and giving them an opportunity to feel part of the game. Tour stop attendees were invited to take a photo with a replica of center court, play on a backyard basketball court, or win prizes by showcasing their college basketball knowledge in trivia.
About 1,500 miles later, the signature piece of the game was delivered to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. The Connor Sports Flooring team assembled the floor, and the NCAA held an exciting championship game with the University of Kentucky Wildcats coming out as the victor.
