Cataño Bay Estuary Benefits from UPS's Reforestation Initiative
Press Release

San Juan, Puerto Rico May 29, 2013 - UPS Puerto Rico, with support from The UPS Foundation, organized a reforestation initiative at the Esperanza Park in Cataño. UPS employees and their families joined forces to participate in this initiative, motivated by the interest of contributing to the preservation of nature and creating a better environment.

A total of 150 trees, including Red, Black and White Mangrove, were planted in an area of the park which is part of the Cataño Bay Estuary.  During the past decades there have been several efforts to preserve that coastal area, which is not only important for maritime life, but also for bird and plant species.

The UPS team had the support of the San Juan Bay Estuary Program team, who through a thorough study identified the trees that needed to be planted in the area.   They also offered the participants support with the planting process and provided the gardening tools that were needed.

"UPS is a fundamental part of the social and economic life of Puerto Rico; therefore we are committed with the community.  The protection of the environment has always been a topic of particular interest for our company, and this initiative will benefit the estuary, the environment and the residents of nearby communities," said Jose Oramas, UPS Puerto Rico general manager.

This project is part of the UPS 1 Million Trees global reforestation initiative that promotes the planting of trees throughout five continents, with the purpose of maintaining a balance in the atmosphere, preserving biodiversity and protecting the ecologic processes.
