UPS Employees Clocked Over 1,850 Volunteer Hours During 10th Annual Global Volunteer Month
Press Release

HONG KONG, Dec. 20, 2012 - Since its founding in 1907, UPS (NYSE:UPS) has established a legacy of support to the communities it serves. The company's commitment is especially evident during its annual Global Volunteer Month, which took place during the month of October. This year, which marks the 10th anniversary of Global Volunteer Month, UPS upholds its commitment to the communities with a record-breaking number of over 440 UPS employees and their families in Hong Kong who contributed more than 1,850 hours to eight charity organizations.

"In Hong Kong, we are very heartened to see the tremendous enthusiasm and increased participation by UPS employees and their families in the Global Volunteer Month in the past years - from only 30 volunteers 10 years ago to 442 volunteers this year. This number not only represents a historical record for UPS Hong Kong, but is also a testament to our dedication and commitment to making a difference in our community through volunteerism," said Mr. William Ng, managing director of UPS Hong Kong and Macau.

During its Global Volunteer Month in October, UPS Hong Kong mobilized a total of 442 employees and their families to participate in a series of nine voluntary activities with eight organizations, including:

  • On the Rehab Power Day, organized by Hong Kong Rehabilitation Power, 99 UPS volunteers contributed 644 hours in the "Lantern For Blessing" programme to build sky lanterns together with people with physical disabilities
  • One-hundred and eight UPS employees and their families participated in the Horticultural Therapy Room Beautifying Day and volunteered 432 hours on a lovely Saturday morning held by the New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association, to decorate the room with new wall paintings, potted plants and scarecrows
  • Over 80 UPS employees and their families volunteered 280 hours in support of the Fu Hong Flag Day to raise funds for the Fu Hong Society and spend time with the beneficiaries of Fu Hong Society in a potato chip making session
  • Twenty-nine UPS volunteers helped out at the Love the Earth Carnival organized by Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council and contributed a total of 174 hours

More than 40 UPS employees and their families volunteered 164 hours by taking children from the Hong Kong Young Women's Christian Association to visit the Fanling Environmental Resources Centre of the Environmental Protection Department.

Globally, UPS enlisted nearly 400,000 employees to pledge 195,000 volunteer hours during the month, of which approximately 5,700 employees in Asia Pacific, contributed more than 26,000 hours of service. In addition, through The UPS Foundation, over US$1.7 million in grants and charitable giving were distributed to approximately 50 non-profit organizations within the Asia Pacific region in 2012. Some UPS employees already volunteer at many of these grant beneficiaries.

"UPS has always embraced the philosophy of giving back to the community through volunteerism, and has made incremental investments in resources to ensure we contribute to Asia's development and growth at the pace it demands," said Pete Elroy, vice president of human resources, UPS Asia Pacific Region. "From the 2,400 employees that volunteered 10 years ago in the inaugural volunteer month, we are very pleased to share that we now have nearly 5,700 Asia-Pacific employees, along with their families and friends, who contribute their time to make communities more environmentally sustainable this year. We look forward to delivering more in the years to come."
