|SHANGHAI, November 7, 2013 - UPS (NYSE: UPS) today announced the first UPS Road CodeTM programme, a safe driving programme sponsored by The UPS Foundation, UPS's charitable arm which leads the company's corporate citizenship efforts. To support this programme a grant of US$107,670 has been awarded to HandsOn Shanghai, a local non-profit organization that focuses on building a better community. UPS Road Code aims to raise the awareness on road safety and foster safe driving habits amongst existing and potential young drivers.
"Training is the cornerstone of safety at UPS. We are committed to promoting road safety awareness through partnerships with supporting organizations to champion various road safety initiatives," said Eduardo Martinez, President of The UPS Foundation. "UPS Road Code provides a platform for us to share knowledge and to prepare the new generation drivers with defensive driving techniques, helping local communities stay safe on the road."
UPS Road Code was first rolled out in 2008 and has since benefitted more than 10,000 young people in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Germany. This year, around 70 university students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Maritime University, Shanghai Customs College and Donghua University, as well as 40 youths from the Shanghai Minhang District will participate in this inaugural UPS program in Asia.
UPS volunteers will introduce UPS's safe driving techniques and methods through four 90-minute classroom-based instruction lessons and participants will be able to practice their learnings through the use of a virtual driving simulator. In addition to the safe driving programme, HandsOn Shanghai will also organize a road safety event on December 1, 2013.
Road safety has been an issue of global concern. According to the World Health Organization, road traffic injuries is among the leading causes of death among young people aged 15 to 29 years. Countries undergoing economic development have a particularly high proportion of deaths.
"Statistics have shown that the lack of safety awareness is one of the leading causes of the high death rate in road accidents," said Fang Hui, Executive Director of HandsOn Shanghai. "It is very encouraging to see companies like UPS care about the road safety situation in China and is committed to providing better training and knowledge to the next generation of drivers and the community."
"Safe driving is one of the core abilities of UPS drivers and they are among the safest drivers on the road. We hope to teach safe driving skills to our next generation of youths, encouraging them to make our roads safer," said Richard Loi, UPS China president. "UPS Road Code programme provides information and resources to encourage inexperienced and young drivers to be ambassadors of driving change, influencing safety awareness, and spreading good driving habits to the people around them as well."
