Gershenhorn to lead growth and innovation initiatives
UPS® (NYSE: UPS) today announced that Alan Gershenhorn is appointed executive vice president and the company's first Chief Commercial Officer, effective immediately. Gershenhorn, 55, will lead development and implementation of broad strategic growth and innovation initiatives focused on creating distinctive customer value. These include new market development, innovative future products and solutions, increased speed-to-market and stronger customer engagement across the entire UPS portfolio. Gershenhorn, a 35-year UPS veteran, previously served as chief sales, marketing and strategy officer.

"Alan has been instrumental in defining and driving our strategic priorities of healthcare logistics, global business to consumer services, and emerging markets capabilities. These will remain priorities among many other growth platforms that will redefine UPS over the next decade."
Gershenhorn has led other transformative efforts in recent years such as the expansion of the global small package portfolio into what today is the industry's broadest, along with the integration and growth of the supply chain solutions portfolio. Prior to his current assignment, Gershenhorn served as president of UPS International. The Long Island, N.Y. native began his UPS career in 1979 as a part-time package handler, working nights while earning his degree. Gershenhorn serves as a member of the World Business Council on Sustainable Development, Board Director of The UPS Foundation and on the University of Houston Alumni CEO Advisory Board.
UPS also announced the addition of Kate Gutmann and Mitch Nichols to the UPS Management Committee, the executive leadership team responsible for setting and executing the strategic direction for the company's worldwide operations.
Gutmann, 45, will be responsible for leading UPS's global sales solutions and customer engagement strategy. Her new role as senior vice president of worldwide sales and solutions was created to further market penetration through broader customer relationships.
Gutmann, a native of Troy, N.Y., is a 24-year UPS veteran. She joined the company in 1989 as a marketing intern while attending Siena College and over the course of her distinguished career has served in various sales and marketing roles, including vice president of marketing for the Europe, Middle East and Africa Region. Gutmann was promoted to her current position as president of worldwide sales in 2011. She is active in the community and serves on the board of directors for the Women Presidents' Organization.
Nichols, 58, a 27-year UPS veteran and current president of UPS Airlines, was promoted to a newly created position on the Management Committee as senior vice president of transportation and engineering. His responsibilities will include UPS Airlines, transportation, engineering and sustainability.
Nichols is widely recognized for his engineering and aviation expertise and his broad community and industry leadership. Currently, he serves on the Transportation Council for the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. As president of UPS Airlines, one of the largest in the world, Nichols also oversaw UPS Worldport, one of the most technologically advanced package sorting facilities and the company's all-points international hub located in Louisville, Ky. A Castro Valley, California native, Nichols joined UPS in 1987 through an acquisition. He will relocate to UPS headquarters in Atlanta.
Brendan Canavan, 53, currently president of UPS Asia Pacific, will replace Nichols as president of UPS Airlines. The Philadelphia native will return to Louisville, having moved from Kentucky in 2007 to serve in UPS international positions over the past seven years. Most recently, Canavan served as president of UPS Asia Pacific for the past two years. Based in Singapore, Canavan was responsible for the company's operations throughout the region and led the company's network expansion and rapid growth in China and other growth markets in Asia.
All of the management changes are effective immediately.
