Delivery Attempts FAQ

What is a UPS InfoNotice?
A UPS InfoNotice is left by the UPS driver to indicate that a delivery has been attempted. Each UPS InfoNotice contains a UPS InfoNotice number and information to help you complete the delivery or pickup.

If the shipments were C.O.D. or Signature Required, refer to boxes checked by your UPS driver on the UPS InfoNotice. If the UPS driver was able to leave your shipment at an alternate location, your UPS InfoNotice indicates where the shipment was left (for example, your garage or back porch). If a shipment pickup was attempted and you were not available, your UPS InfoNotice indicates the next pickup date and time.

The InfoNotice number appears on the bottom of the UPS InfoNotice above the barcode. You can use this number to track, locate, and verify the arrival of shipments. Select the Tracking tab and enter your UPS InfoNotice number as you would a Tracking Number.

What is the purpose of the UPS InfoNotice barcode and barcode number?
The barcode on your UPS InfoNotice gives you easy access to your shipment delivery information. By entering this one number, you can track all your shipments at UPS.com and receive additional information regarding future delivery attempts for your shipments.

I was not home when a delivery was attempted, and a UPS InfoNotice was left. Will UPS make another attempt?
Yes. UPS makes up to three delivery attempts, excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

What time will the next attempt be made?
If this was a first or second attempt, the next delivery attempt will be made on the next business day. Your UPS driver has indicated on the UPS InfoNotice the approximate time range within which the next attempt will be made.

Will UPS deliver my shipment to another address?
Yes. Simply write the address you would like to have the shipment delivered to on the "Comments Line" on the front of the UPS InfoNotice. This alternate address must be in close proximity to your address; for example, you might include a neighbor's address. Then place the UPS InfoNotice back in the same location where the driver originally left it. (This does not apply to "Adult signature required" deliveries.)

You may also change your delivery address on UPS.com. Select the Tracking tab and enter your 12-digit InfoNotice number. In the Package Progress section, select the link to Choose Another Delivery Option. Select the Deliver to Another Address option and fill in the required details to have your shipment delivered to an alternate address.

There were three attempts made to deliver my shipment, but I was not at home. What happens to my shipment now?
Unless it was a C.O.D. delivery, UPS will hold your shipment for five business days at the nearest UPS center. If the shipment is not picked up within five business days, it will be returned to the sender and a postcard will be sent to the consignee.

C.O.D. shipments are automatically returned to the sender on the same day the final delivery attempt is made.

I will not be available to receive my shipment when UPS returns. What are my options?
There are several delivery options available for consignees. First, look closely at the UPS InfoNotice to see if any instructional boxes are checked. Depending on the requirements of the shipper, you may be able to sign the back of the UPS InfoNotice authorizing the driver to leave your shipment. Or, in the comments section of the note, you may write another address where the driver should take the shipment for delivery.

You may also choose other delivery options using UPS.com. Select the Tracking tab, enter your 12-digit InfoNotice number, and select the Track button. In the Package Progress section, select the link to Choose Another Delivery Option. Select one of the following options:

  • Will Call
  • Delivery to Another Address
  • Reschedule Delivery
  • Return to Sender.

How can I plan ahead to receive my shipment on the first delivery attempt?
To receive your shipment on the first delivery attempt, track the shipment and leave a note for the driver on the scheduled delivery day. The note can instruct the driver to either leave the shipment, or, if a signature is required, deliver it to a nearby neighbor who is home during the day. Other options include having shipments sent to an address where someone is available during the day.

I need to intercept the package I shipped. What are my options?
With UPS Delivery InterceptSM, you can maintain control of your packages as they move through the UPS network. This fee-based service allows you to request the intercept of packages prior to delivery. On the Track Shipments page, select the link to Request UPS Delivery Intercept. Choose from the following intercept options:

  • Return to Sender: Return the package to the shipper
  • Deliver to Another Address: Reroute the package to a new address
  • Reschedule Delivery: Hold the package for delivery on a future date
  • Will Call: Hold the package for pickup by the consignee

You will only be charged if your intercept request is completed.
