Creating a Return FAQ

What are the various Return Services and how do they work?
UPS provides various return services that allow you and your package recipients to return goods by paying a nominal fee.

UPS ReturnsSM - Electronic Return Label (ERL) e-mail
With this Return Service, UPS sends a return label via e-mail to the recipient you specify. The recipient prints the return label and attaches it to the package being returned.
UPS Returns - Print Return Label
This Return Service allows you to create a return label and send it to the recipient with your shipment or separately.
UPS Returns - Print and Mail Return Label
With this Return Service, UPS prints your return label and sends it to the party making the return.
UPS Returns Plus
With this option, a UPS driver carries a preprinted return label when attempting to pick up the return package. Choose between these two options:

  • 1 UPS Pickup Attempt allows the shipper to request one pickup attempt for return of a UPS-compatible package. If the package cannot be picked up, the label is left for the recipient to return the package via any UPS method.
  • 3 UPS Pickup Attempts allows the shipper to request three pickup attempts for return of a UPS-compatible package. After the third pickup attempt, the label is returned to UPS.

How many packages can I return at a time?

In the U.S. and Puerto Rico, you can return only one package at a time. Multi-piece return shipments are not allowed.

In many other countries, multi-piece return shipments are allowed. In those countries, a drop-down list appears on the page, allowing the sender to select up to 20 packages for the return shipment.

How do I create a return shipment?
To create a return shipment, follow the steps below:

  1. Once logged in, select the Shipping tab at the top. In the area at the left, select Create a Shipment, then select Create a Return.
  2. On this page, select a Return From address (the original recipient address) from the drop-down list or an external address book (if available). Or to enter an address, select Enter New Address. When the page refreshes, confirm the Return To information. To make changes, select Edit.
  3. Confirm the Bill To information, which displays your default payment method. To make changes, select Edit.
  4. Select the Return Service you want to use from the drop-down list. When selecting a return service you have the option of billing yourself, the person or company returning the package, or a third party.
  5. Next, select the UPS shipping service from the Service drop-down list.
Note: In some countries, multi-piece return shipments are allowed. In those countries, a drop list appears on the page, allowing the sender to select up to 20 packages for the return shipment. Multi-piece returns are not allowed in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
  6. Some trans-border returns could require a Description of Commodity (e.g., textiles, machine parts, etc.). For documents and similar materials, you can check Documents of No Commercial Value.
  7. For each return package, select the type of packaging from the drop-down list (e.g., packaging provided by UPS, UPS Letter, your packaging, or other) and enter Weight. Confirm, write over, or enter a Merchandise Description using specific language, such as annual reports (documents) or 9mm steel screws (non-documents). Avoid general terms such as documents, printed material, and samples. If needed, enter a Declared Value.
  8. Reference #1 displays your default preference, or you can fill in the field, at your option. The reference number on this page helps you and your company track your return shipment using a purchase order number, invoice number, department number, or any value (combination of words and numbers) your company requires for its internal accounting.
  9. To encode the reference number on your shipping label, select the checkbox. You can also choose to send an E-Mail Return Notification. When the return package enters the UPS system, an e-mail notice will be sent to the recipients you've indicated.

What are Return Options and how do I use them?

This page displays when you select Add Return Options (at the bottom of the Create a Return page) or when you are returning more than one package.

Follow these steps when you want to Add Return Options:

  1. Confirm the Return From address, which displays information entered on the Create a Return page (e.g., the original recipient address). To make changes, select Edit.
  2. Confirm the Return To information, which displays information entered on the Create a Return page (e.g., the name and address of the shipper or an authorized service center). To make changes, select Edit.
  3. To Perform Detailed Address Validation, in which the address is verified or suggested alternatives displayed, select the checkbox.
  4. Confirm or select the Return Service you want to use from the drop-down list. Then confirm or select the UPS shipping service from the Service drop-down list.
Note: In some countries, multi-piece return shipments are allowed. In those countries, a drop-down list appears on the page, allowing the sender to select up to 20 packages for the return shipment. Multi-piece returns are not allowed in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
  5. You also have the option to enter an e-mail address to send an Electronic Return Label (ERL) and memo to the appropriate recipient (e.g., the person most likely to handle returns). If the ERL cannot be delivered, a notice will be sent to the e-mail address you enter.
  6. You can also select E-mail Return Notification. When the return package enters the UPS system, an e-mail notice will be sent to the recipients you've indicated.
  7. For each package, select the type of packaging from the drop-down list and enter Weight. Confirm, write over, or enter a Merchandise Description using specific language, such as annual reports for documents or 9mm steel screws for non-documents.
On this page you can also enter the dimensions of your own packaging and indicate whether the package is oversize or requires additional handling. Check or uncheck whether Reference #1 should be encoded on the shipping label.
  9. Confirm the UPS Account Number for this shipment, which displays as your default payment method. To use a different account number, select from the drop-down list. You must select whether to bill your UPS account number or a third party. To add a UPS account number to your list, select Add Account. How do I void a return shipment?
After logging into My UPS, select Create a Shipment on the Shipping tab. Then select View History or Void Shipment. To void the return within 24 hours, select today's date. If the shipment you want to void does not appear in your history, wait several minutes and refresh the screen.

Locate the return shipment to be voided, select the radio button next to the shipment, and select Void Shipment. The return shipment (all packages in that shipment) will be voided and an "X" will appear next to the return shipment.

You may void a return package from your shipping history only within 24 hours of processing the package. To void a shipment after 24 hours, contact your local UPS customer service office.
