What is Changing for UPS Online Tools?
Digital Certificate Update
UPS will be making changes in the security architecture of our secure websites. These changes are being mandated by our Digital Certificate Vendor.

The change will entail migrating Secure Site and Standard SSL (Secure Socket Layer) certificates from a single-tier certificate hierarchy (unchained) to a more secure two-tier certificate hierarchy (chained) under the Class 3 Public Primary Root Certification Authority. This will require a new root certificate which is largely available already in most Web browsers. Chained Certificates require SSLv3 as a minimum and as a result UPS will cease support of SSL Version 2.0.

The vast majority of our customers already use SSLv3 and the few that do not have already been contacted in a separate tech alert. In addition, SSLv2 is currently only supported on the www.ups.com domain. If you are sending your tool requests to onlinetools.ups.com you are already SSLv3 compliant.

The migration from unchained certificates to chained certificates will be implemented on May 19, 2009, at which point the tool web URLs will cease support of the Unchained Digital Certificate.

You can test if your system supports SSL Version 3.0 and the new type of Digital Certificate by connecting to the Customer Integration Environment (CIE) to test.

You can connect to each tool CIE by using the following URL:
https://wwwcie.ups.com/ups.app/xml/ [Tool Name].

For example, the Tracking XML Tool CIE URL is as follows:
https://wwwcie.ups.com/ups.app/xml/Track

The Customer Integration Environment began using Chained Digital Certificate (and SSLv3 only) since early 2007.

Please keep in mind that the Production Environment on May 19, 2009, will have a similar Digital Certificate as the CIE but it will not be exactly the same.

UPS's goal with this migration is to ensure that our customers are aware of the change and are able to support the new Chained Certificates so that there is no interruption of successful connectivity and transmission between UPS and their customers.

Back-End Architectural Change
As part of continuous engineering improvement initiatives, UPS has re-architected the Rate, Ship and Track XML Tools. The changes to the underlying architecture do not change the XML interfaces to these tools. These changes were deployed in the Customer Integration Environment (CIE) in January, 2009, and are scheduled to be moved into production on July 11, 2009.

It is important for existing XOLT Integrators to know that there was a change but that this change should not impact current implementations. As with all technology changes, it is prudent to perform some regression testing to guarantee the changes will not impact you.
