You can send either a single address or a list of addresses to UPS for classification as either a residential or commercial address in the United States and Puerto Rico only.
A Classify Ship to Address as Residential or Commercial preference on the System Preferences Editor has been added.
UPS recommends that all Ship To addresses be classified.
Classify Ship To Address:
The Classify Ship To address menu item can perform two kinds of running address classifications:
- Interactive Classification of a Single Address - This feature allows the customer to classify an Address Book entry or a Ship To address immediately.
- Batch Classification of Multiple Addresses - This feature collects Address Book entries that meet specific criteria and transmits these entries to UPS for classification. After classification, the entries are downloaded to your pc for reconciliation.
Note: Only one batch classification request is allowed per day.
Enabling Classify Ship To Address in the System Preferences Editor
- On the Tools menu, select System Preferences Editor.
- Select the Miscellaneous tab.
- Select the Classify Ship To address as Residential or Commercial check box.
- Select the Apply button.
- Select the OK button to close the System Preferences Editor.
Classifying an Address Interactively in the Address Book Editor Window
- On the Tools menu select Address Book Editor. The Address Book Editor window appears.
- Type the address information or select the down arrow in the Company or Name box and select an existing company or name.
- Select the Send Addresses for Classification button.
- During the classification various messages appear.
- After the Classification process is complete:
- If the address is classified, the message "Address classification completed." appears. Select the OK button.
- ZIP+4 validation options are removed. The system is enabled for UPS Classification by UPS.
- Select the Close button.
Classifying Addresses in a Batch
- On the Tools menu, select Classify Ship To Address.
- Select the Send Addresses for Classification button.
- View the progress of the collection of addresses. After the collection is complete, the "Your addresses will be sent for classification. You will receive a message when your addresses are returned for resolution." message appears.
- Select the OK button.
- Select the Close button. The Shipping window appears.
- Resume usual UPS WorldShip activities. When the classification is complete the Batch Address Classification Response Notification window appears.
- Take the appropriate action as follows:
- Select the Download Now button to download the validated address immediately. When the download is complete, the message "The address classification responses were successfully downloaded" appears.
- Select the Defer button to postpone the download of the classified addresses until your next communication session with the UPS Data Center. You can defer the download three times; thereafter the Defer button becomes inactive, and you must click either the Download Now or the Delete button.
- Select the Delete button to delete the address classified responses. Deleting the address classification responses may cause service delays to occur on future shipments if an invalid address is used.
- Select the OK button.
- On the Tools menu select Address Book Editor.
- Select the Resolve Returned addresses button. The Postal Code Update Notification window appears. This window allows you to select or decline automatic resolution of addresses that require a postal code update.

- To select manual reconciliation of +4 updates, clear the Add the +4 to My existing ZIP Code check box.
- Select the Update button. If you selected the Add the +4 to My Existing ZIP Code check box, each address requiring only a +4 update is updated automatically. If you cleared the Add the +4 to My Existing ZIP Code check box or if additional addresses require reconciliation the UPS Address Reconciler window appears.
- Select the down arrow in the Company Name box to view the addresses requiring reconciliation and select a company name. The original address information appears in the corresponding boxes on the left.
