The UPS Foundation delivers NT$80 million in grants to over 60 Asia Pacific charities in 2008
Press Release

UPS Taiwan helps Hsinchu Jen-Ai Children's Home purchase vehicle

Taiwan, March 24, 2009 - Despite the currently challenging economic climate, The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS [NYSE: UPS], continues to deliver on its commitment to communities as it provided grants totaling NT $79.9 million (US$2.35 million) in support of over 60 Asia Pacific charitable organizations in 2008 including nearly NT$100,000 to the Hsinchu Jen-Ai Children's Home to help purchase a vehicle for the children's transportation needs.

The grants in 2008, support initiatives ranging from wetland conservation, skills training,  purchasing  school supplies, and support for disaster relief efforts including medical treatment and rehabilitation. These efforts underscore The UPS Foundation's unique approach to philanthropy as it impacts communities not only in the Asia Pacific region but also around the world.

"UPS is extremely proud to partner with many of the notable charities in Asia Pacific as we continue to increase our efforts to meet the needs of the communities we serve. By also bringing together the spirit and energy of UPS volunteers, we have provided a value to communities far beyond that of grants alone," said Derek Woodward, President of UPS Asia Pacific Region.

In 2008, The UPS Foundation realigned its global strategy to focus on economic and global literacy, environmental sustainability, nonprofit effectiveness, diversity and community safety. These focus areas reflect the Foundation's commitment to innovative ideas that leverage the strength of UPS and its people to address the many challenges facing the communities it serves.

In Taiwan, the grant is directed towards Hsinchu Jen-Ai Children's objective to improve its facilities to provide shelter for children without parental care. "Community is one of UPS's four core values. We endeavor to help the minority meet their urgent needs. This donation will help Hsinchu Jen-Ai Children's Home solve its problem of insufficient vehicles to transport the children," said Gary Wu, General Manager of UPS Taiwan.

Yu-kun Chen, chairman of Hsinchu Jen-Ai Children's Home, said, "In today's economic situation, it's really hard to find grants and resources. The support of The UPS Foundation is a tremendous inspiration to the children and employees of the children's home. We really appreciate The UPS Foundation's encouragement and support."

On top of its standard grants in 2008, The UPS Foundation responded to the Sichuan earthquake by contributing more than US$1 million in cash and in-kind support to the earthquake relief efforts in China. It has also extended in-kind shipping and logistical support and expertise to the relief efforts to the victims of Cyclone Nargis that hit Myanmar last year.

The UPS Foundation also designated October as Global Volunteer Month, where UPS employees volunteer with various charities in their own communities. In 2008, UPS employees contributed 14,000 hours to local charities in Asia Pacific.

Founded in 1951, The UPS Foundation has grown to be a philanthropic leader recognized for its generosity and impact. Today, its distinctive approach to philanthropy impacts communities around the world and supports the committed engagement of over 400,000 UPS employees.
