UPS Global Volunteer Month in Taiwan: service hours increased 48%
Press Release

Special sign language cheer squad for Deaflympics Charity Basketball Game

Taipei, 10 October, 2008-- UPS announced that it has turned its Global Volunteer Week, which initially began as a week of giving back to the community, into a month's worth of volunteer activities. The newly extended event will also take place in Taiwan. Starting today, over 277 UPS volunteers will begin a series of community works and donate 1,067 service hours island-wide. The number of service hours will reach a new record with a 48% increase from last year.

UPS's volunteer works demonstrate the company's passion for removing boundaries for charity groups. In Taipei, UPS helps organize the Deaflympics Charity Basketball Game held on October 10. The top-notch players of the Taiwan Beer Basketball Team will wear earplugs to compete against the Deaflympics basketball team. The game involves special requirements due to the contestants' hearing impairment. For example, a flashing light replaces the standard whistle. In addition, UPS volunteers will show their support with a sign language cheer to create a passionate game for the athletes.

Near hundred of UPS volunteers specially prepared an original sign language and dance performance, adopting the letters U, P, and S to convey the concept of "U are Number 1," "Passion never dies," and "Standing by your side" through international sign language, showing the spirit of UPS by cheering for the Deaflympics athletes.  Moreover, the Deaflympics dance "Power in me" which sparks an exciting ambiance hopes to trigger audience participation and attach importance to the Deaflympics. UPS volunteers also assisted the committee on delivering commodities, sustaining orders and guiding the audience.

Gary Wu, General Manager of UPS Taiwan, said, "This year, UPS specially expanded its Global Volunteer Week into Global Volunteer Month, in order to show our resolution to contribute to the community and our spirit to help clients leap over obstacles. We believe the sign language cheer squad and "Power in me" dance can enable hearing impaired basketball players to feel our enthusiasm and increase public awareness of the Deaflympics in 2009."

Furthermore, UPS cooperated with Children's Hearing Foundation in Taipei, Taoyuan and Kaohsiung, volunteering to put books in order, clean teaching aids, and accompany hearing impaired children on an outing. Additionally, volunteers visited Taoyuan Development Center for the Spinal Cord Injured to clean its new center expected to be inaugurated soon. In Hsinchu, volunteers joined the autumn beach cleaning activities held by the government, while volunteers in Taichung paid a visit to the Huei-Ming home for visually impaired children, cleaning the campus and donating approximately NT$750,000 for new instruments to a band comprised of these children. In Kaohsiung, volunteers cooperated with Wetlands Taiwan to clean up the Chouchai Wetland Park.

UPS' Global Volunteer Month first began in 2003 as a seven-day community service initiative with 1,000 volunteers. This year, UPS expects to have 30,000 employees participating worldwide through volunteerism.

UPS Global Volunteer Month is an initiative of The UPS Foundation. Founded in 1951 and based in Atlanta, Ga., the Foundation identifies specific areas where its support will clearly impact social issues. In May this year, The UPS Foundation made a cash donation of $500,000 to the American Red Cross in support of Red Cross earthquake response efforts in Chengdu, and pledged an additional $500,000 for in-kind support to aid the delivery of relief supplies. Earlier on in the month, The UPS Foundation also pledged $200,000 to CARE, the international humanitarian organization, to support its efforts to deliver aid to Myanmar in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Nargis.
