UPS Asia Pacific to Deliver Over 18,000 Volunteer Hours during "Global Volunteer Month"
Press Release

Over 4,000 UPS Employees Commit to Community Work in Asia

Singapore, Nov 2, 2009 - UPS employees and their families worldwide donated almost 150,000 volunteer hours during this month's 7th annual "Global Volunteer Month." In Asia, UPS aims to mobilise over 4,000 employees to volunteer over 18,000 hours to their local communities.

"UPS continues to make community involvement a top priority," said Derek Woodward, President of UPS Asia Pacific Region. "We hope our long-standing commitment to volunteerism will deliver and answer the needs of the very communities we live and work in."

This year, UPS volunteer efforts across the globe largely focused on: community safety, non-profit effectiveness, the environment, economic/global literacy and diversity.

"There are many people out there who need our help and our employees take great pride in being part of this global event. The UPS Global Volunteer Month commitment is one of the most meaningful ways we can contribute to our society." said Gillian Sim, Managing Director of UPS Singapore.

Over 210 UPS employees and their families contributed a total of 1,048 hours to various charity movements here in Singapore. UPS volunteers reached out to needy children from the Sunbeam Place, spending an afternoon painting dustbins with them. Outside of this, UPS volunteers regularly devote time to help out in the home's Starfish Programme, providing special one-on-one attention to help abused and neglected children enjoy social activities outside the confines of the home.

In another Global Volunteer Month activity, UPS invited disadvantaged children from the Touch Community's Touch Young Arrow programme to tour UPS's facilities and watch UPS's operations in action.

In addition, UPS Singapore Volunteers spent a weekend with residents from Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled, where UPS volunteers buddied with residents of the home and participated in games at MacRitchie Reservoir Park.'

UPS also provided financial contributions to charity organisations including a US$38,000 grant to The Lions Home for the purchase of washing machines and dryers to meet the needs of the elderly residents.

To further encourage worldwide employee participation this year, The UPS Foundation will donate US$100,000 through an employee contest. Ten UPS employees will be picked to win a US$10,000 charitable contribution for the non-profit agencies at which they volunteer during Global Volunteer Month.

Last year, UPS employees around the world dedicated more than 140,000 hours to volunteer service during Global Volunteer Month to activities like youth mentoring, charity trail walks, home building, and litter cleanup/ park beautification projects.

Since its founding in 1907, UPS has built a legacy as a caring and responsible corporate citizen. Whether through involvement with United Way, The UPS Foundation or volunteerism, UPS provides assistance to programmes that address social and community issues. UPS is currently providing the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) with disaster relief operations support to areas affected by the flood in the Philippines and by the earthquake in Padang, Indonesia. The UPS foundation has also made a US$48,200 grant to the United Way of Taiwan for reconstruction of damage caused to the island by Typhoon Morakot.

"Volunteerism is something that binds us together as a company and makes us stronger," said Scott Davis, UPS Chairman and CEO. "I firmly believe that people prefer to do business with, and work for, companies that act responsibly and care about the communities they serve."
