The UPS Foundation delivers US$2.35 million in grants to over 60 Asia Pacific charities in 2008
Press Release

Singapore, March 24, 2009 - The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS [NYSE: UPS], continues to deliver on its commitment to communities as it provided grants totaling US$2.35 million in support of over 60 charitable organizations in Asia Pacific in 2008, including US$55,106 to the Down Syndrome Association (DSA) Singapore, to help students with Down syndrome integrate into mainstream schools.

The grants in 2008, support initiatives ranging from wetland conservation, skills training,  purchasing  school supplies, and support for disaster relief efforts including medical treatment and rehabilitation. These efforts underscore The UPS Foundation's unique approach to philanthropy as it impacts communities not only in the Asia Pacific region but also around the world.

"UPS is extremely proud to partner with many of the notable charities in Asia Pacific as we continue to increase our efforts to meet the needs of the communities we serve. By also bringing together the spirit and energy of UPS volunteers, we have provided a value to communities far beyond that of grants alone," said Derek Woodward, President of UPS Asia Pacific Region.

In 2008, The UPS Foundation realigned its global strategy to focus on economic and global literacy, environmental sustainability, nonprofit effectiveness, diversity and community safety. These focus areas reflect the Foundation's commitment to innovative ideas that leverage the strength of UPS and its people to address the many challenges facing the communities it serves.

In Singapore, the grant will be directed towards the Children's Educational and Support Services program of DSA, focusing on the developmental and educational aspects of children with Down syndrome. This includes the Integration Facilitation Support Programme, which helps these children function in a mainstream educational setting, encouraging inclusion and integration among their peers who do not have the condition.

In addition to financial contributions from The UPS Foundation, UPS employees in Singapore volunteered more than 650 hours at DSA's Charity Bowl, Fund-raising Charity Dinner and Show and the annual Flag Day last year.

"Over 283 UPS employees in Singapore volunteered 1,391 hours of service to the community in 2008. UPS will continue to donate and provide assistance where we can because we want to be able to make a difference, no matter how big or small, through our efforts. The spirit of giving is truly alive and well at UPS," said Mary Yeo, Managing Director, UPS Singapore.

On top of its standard grants in 2008, The UPS Foundation responded to the Sichuan earthquake by contributing more than US$1 million in cash and in-kind support to the earthquake relief efforts in China. It has also extended in-kind shipping and logistical support and expertise to the relief efforts to the victims of Cyclone Nargis that hit Myanmar last year.

The UPS Foundation also designated October as Global Volunteer Month, where UPS employees volunteer with various charities in their own communities. In 2008, UPS employees contributed 14,000 hours to local charities in Asia Pacific.

Founded in 1951, The UPS Foundation has grown to be a philanthropic leader recognized for its generosity and impact. Today, its distinctive approach to philanthropy impacts communities around the world and supports the committed engagement of over 400,000 UPS employees.
