New Requirement for Hazardous Materials Shipments

From October 1, 2010, hazardous materials shipments with the United States and Puerto Rico as origin and/or destination will require new Emergency Response Registrant (ERR) information to be printed on shipping documents. A new field 'ERR Registrant' will be added onto UPS shipping systems, in which customers should fill in the registrant's name associated with the Emergency Response Telephone number.

Customers who fail to comply by October 1 may be subject to significant government fines up to US$50,000 per package and potential loss of license.  Not every shipper is affected, so the first step is to determine whether the new ERR information requirement applies. Please do this by visiting www.phmsa.dot.gov and refer to Docket HM-206F.

If the requirement does apply, please review the steps outlined below.

For UPS WorldShip™

  • Note that the new ERR information field will be enabled only in UPS WorldShip 2010 version 12.0. If you're using an earlier version of UPS WorldShip, please upgrade your software by downloading from www.ups.com/worldshipsupport or installing the software from the enclosed CD.
  • For UPS WorldShip 2010 version 12.0 users, the new ERR information field will be applied as part of electronic updates scheduled for third quarter 2010.

If you need UPS WorldShip technical assistance, please call local technical helpline number by country).  Alternatively, you may wish to contact your UPS account executive or local customer service representative for more details.
