UPS Launches Fourth Annual Global Volunteer Week
Angeles City, Pampanga, - What does a company that
delivers almost 15 million packages and documents to 200 countries everyday do
in its spare time? Spend 100,000 hours volunteering in 50 countries.
As part of the fourth annual UPS Global Volunteer Week, from October 14 to
22, and extended to November for some Asian cities preparing for Ramadan, UPS
employees will donate their time and talents to help local communities by taking
on such tasks as repairing schools and reading to children to assisting food
banks and landscaping for community organizations. The effort will extend from
Asia and Latin America to the United States and Europe.
"UPS delivers packages to doorsteps and a helping hand to local communities,"
said Ken Torok, President of UPS Asia Pacific Region. "Our employees are good
neighbours and Global Volunteer Week reinforces our legacy of
volunteerism."
In the Philippines, UPS will dedicate its Global Volunteer Week in helping
less fortunate families in Cuayan, Angeles City, in partnership with
Gawad-Kalinga Community Development Foundation. UPSers will paint houses,
landscape and clean the grounds of the Gawad-Kalinga village consisting of 40
housing units.
"It is truly inspiring to see our employees who have eagerly volunteered to
be part of this community outreach in Angeles," said Tim Gohoc, Managing
Director of UPS Philippines. "We embrace the community spirit and will stay
committed to the community where we operate in, especially here in Pampanga
where our intra-Asia hub is located."
Since 2003, the week-long community service initiative has grown from roughly
1,000 volunteers in 2003 to over 20,000 expected globally this year Local UPS
employees choose their own Global Volunteer Week projects because employees best
understand the needs in their own communities. The program this year around the
world will include volunteer efforts such as:
- More than 500 hours coordinating a baseball tournament for blind and
visually impaired children in Taiwan.
- Nearly 2,000 hours renovating schools and shelters in Germany.
- An estimated 6,500 hours across the United States providing logistics
support for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure fundraising walks for breast
cancer research.
- And more than 100 hours sorting food for food banks in Montreal,
Canada.
Founded in 1951 and based in Atlanta, Ga., The UPS Foundation identifies
specific areas where its support will clearly impact social issues. The

increased global volunteerism, literacy and hunger relief. In 2005, The
UPS Foundation donated more than $43.8 million to charitable organizations
