What is a tracking number?
Tracking numbers are used by UPS to identify and trace packages and freight shipments as they move through the UPS system to their destination. UPS automatically assigns a tracking number to your shipment.

UPS tracking numbers appear in the following formats:

  • 1Z 999 999 99 9999 999 9
  • 9999 9999 9999
  • T999 9999 999

UPS will also track the following types of tracking numbers, using unique numeric formats that contain from seven to 20 characters: 

  • Delivery Order/Sub-PRO Number - another name for less-than-truckload (LTL)/and Truckload (TL) child shipment tracking numbers 
  • House Air Waybill - used for air freight movement
  • House Bill of Lading - used for ocean freight movement
  • PRO Number - used for surface freight movement
  • UPS InfoNotice - a notice given on first delivery attempt in the U.S. and some countries in Europe and Asia 
  • UPS Service Notice - a notice given on first delivery attempt in some countries

What is a UPS Service Notice?
If UPS is unable to complete the delivery of a shipment, a UPS Service Notice will be left at the address stating that a delivery has been attempted.

On the second business day and, if necessary, on the third business day, UPS will attempt to deliver the shipment without additional charge. Each UPS Service Notice should include a handwritten UPS Service Notice number written in by the driver. You can use this number to track, locate, and verify the arrival of shipments. Select the Tracking tab and enter your UPS Service Notice number as you would a tracking number.

What shipment events are recorded in the UPS Tracking application?
Shipment movement information is captured each time a tracking label is scanned in the UPS delivery system. Common scans include the following:

  • Billing Information Received: UPS has received the electronic transmission of shipment detail from the shipper. It does not necessarily mean that UPS has taken possession of the shipment.
  • Origin: The shipment has been scanned at the origin UPS location.
  • Departure: The shipment has left its present location and is on its way toward the destination address.
  • Arrival: The shipment has arrived at an intermediate sort facility or the destination facility.
  • Out for Delivery: The shipment has reached the facility that is responsible for delivering the shipment. This is a shipment's last stop before delivery.
  • Delivery: The shipment has been delivered. The date and time of delivery is recorded.
  • Exception: If the shipment cannot be delivered or is delayed, the reason is noted.

What does Rescheduled mean when checking the status of my shipment in the UPS Tracking application?
The designation Rescheduled in the Status field of the Tracking Summary or Tracking Detail means that the delivery date has been changed, and the shipment should be delivered on the revised delivery date.

What does Returned to Shipper mean when checking the status of my shipment in the UPS Tracking application?
The designation Returned to Shipper in the Status field of the Tracking Summary or Tracking Detail page means that the shipment was returned to the original shipper. Possible reasons for return include, but are not limited to:

  • Shipment being refused by the intended receiver
  • Physical address not able to be found by UPS
  • Unable to deliver after multiple delivery attempts

Why don't I see the Guaranteed Service Refund (GSR) information I requested in the UPS Tracking application?
GSR status is indicated by a note near the bottom of the Tracking Detail page. Service refunds are not available in some countries.
