UPS Strengthens Sustainability Commitment in Asia Pacific

UPS Carbon Neutral Now Supports Sustainability Projects in China and Thailand

SINGAPORE, Mar 3, 2011 - Following the launch of UPS carbon neutral in Asia Pacific in 2010, UPS (NYSE:UPS) further strengthened its commitment to sustainability through its support in two major environmental ventures in the region.

The UPS carbon neutral shipping programme enables customers to mitigate the climate impact of their shipping by paying a small fee to calculate and offset the carbon emissions associated with their shipments.

"At UPS, sustainability is our way of doing business. We believe that community and sustainability involvement needs to be as local as possible and we have now expanded to include two carbon offset projects in the region. As Asia Pacific continues to develop, businesses are becoming more environmentally conscious and we believe that more customers will be encouraged to adopt UPS carbon neutral as we join in the efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," said Derek Woodward, president of the UPS Asia Pacific region.

Here are the details of UPS's two carbon offset projects in Asia Pacific.  The projects are overseen by The CarbonNeutral Company and are Gold Standard and Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) certified offsets:

  • The Fujian Landfill Gas is a project located in Southern China that captures the green house gas methane at a landfill site and uses it to generate clean electricity.

  • The Cholburi Wastewater Biogas-to-Energy project uses biogas from wastewater to generate heat and power at a tapioca starch drying factory in Cholburi, Thailand.

Just as in 2010, UPS will continue to match the number of offsets purchased through 2011 up to a total of US$1 million.

In the expansion of UPS carbon neutral, UPS customers can now elect to contribute to sustainability using UPS carbon neutral as an option within the UPS WorldShip® shipping system which is used by over 400,000 shippers worldwide.

Customers who elect for UPS carbon neutral will pay a small fee to offset the carbon emissions associated with their shipments. The calculation to measure the carbon (CO2) impact of the customer's shipments is based on current and historical operational data, including distance and transport mode and comprehensive carbon inventory.

When a customer elects to neutralize their shipments, UPS will calculate the carbon impact and then purchase high-quality certified carbon offsets.

UPS's proprietary calculation methodology and processes are verified by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS). In addition, the carbon offset process also is certified by The CarbonNeutral Company. The calculator is based on Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the most widely used international standard for carbon accounting and reporting.

UPS carbon neutral complements the company's sustainable business practices worldwide. These include operational efficiency, conservation initiatives and industry-leading innovations. UPS recently was named by Climate Counts as the leader in the consumer shipping category for the second consecutive year.
