U.S. Food Import Rules
Service Update

In December 2005, the United States began enforcing new regulations related to food imports. These rules are designed to give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) a means of tracking food shipments to, from and within the United States, during transit and while stored.

Under these regulations, anytime a food shipment enters the United States, the FDA may demand information pertaining to the shipment and the immediate subsequent recipient. You will need to be sure that your records of your UPS shipments enable you to comply with the regulations.

You may already maintain the necessary records, items such as: name of the immediate previous source and immediate subsequent recipient, shipment origin and destination, date of shipment and date of delivery, number of packages shipped, description of shipment contents, and full route of the food shipment.

The UPS Tariff has been amended to acknowledge the new regulations and UPS shippers' obligation to establish and maintain records for shipments containing food. If you need to request UPS tracking information as part of your record keeping, please note that relevant information will be available up to 45 days after delivery.

We also recommend UPS Quantum View™ Manage as a practical tool for routinely retrieving UPS tracking information and downloading it in a format to fit your needs. You can use Quantum View Manage to track domestic and international shipments, both imports and exports. For more information about Quantum View Manage and an online demo, visit http://www.ups.com/qvdemo. To begin using UPS Quantum View, contact your UPS Account Representative by calling 1-800-PICK-UPS.

You can find more information about the new FDA regulations at fda.gov. Highlights are available in the FDA press release on this topic:  www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/news/2004/NEW01143.html.
