UPS Asia Pacific to Deliver Over 18,000 Volunteer Hours during "Global Volunteer Month"
Press Release

130 UPS Korea Employees Volunteer in Community Work

Korea, Nov. 9, 2009 - UPS employees and their families worldwide have donated almost 150,000 volunteer hours, driven by the company's 7th annual "Global Volunteer Month" during October. In Asia, UPS mobilised over 4,000 employees to volunteer over 18,000 hours helping locals improve their community's education, living conditions and environment.

This year, volunteer efforts will be largely in the company's primary areas of focus: community safety, non-profit effectiveness, the environment, economic/global literacy and diversity.  This will allow UPS volunteers to effectively apply their work expertise and address vital community needs.

About 130 UPS Korea employees and their families volunteered over 520 hours during Global Volunteer Month. One of the activities was "Beautiful Saturday with UPS", a charity market organised with 'Beautiful Store Hong-Ik university branch'. The Beautiful Store is a non-profit organisation that encourages a culture of sharing and recycling in Korea. Donated items are cleaned and repaired at The Beautiful Store before being sold to the community at a low price.

For "Beautiful Saturday with UPS", UPS volunteers collected over 1,700 donated items and resold them. Over 2,400,000 won were raised for The Beautiful Store.

In another activity, UPS volunteers visited Young Nak Aeneas's Home, a home for children with cerebral palsy in Seoul.  UPS volunteers spent time with the children and helped clean the home and their wheelchairs. And the UPS Foundation also contributed a  US$30,600 (about 36,178,300 won) grant to the home to purchase a special-purposed vehicle for transporting the children and their wheelchairs.

To encourage even greater employee participation this year, The UPS Foundation will donate US$100,000 through an employee contest.  Ten UPS employees will be picked to win a US$10,000 charitable contribution for the non-profit agencies at which they volunteer during Global Volunteer Month.

Last year, UPS employees around the world dedicated more than 140,000 hours to volunteer service during Global Volunteer Month to activities like youth mentoring, charity trail walks, home building, and litter cleanup/ park beautification projects.

Since its founding in 1907, UPS has built a legacy as a caring and responsible corporate citizen. Whether through involvement with United Way, The UPS Foundation or volunteerism, UPS provides assistance to programmes that address social and community issues. UPS is currently providing the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) with disaster relief operations support to areas affected by the flood in the Philippines and by the earthquake in Padang, Indonesia. The UPS foundation has also made a US$48,200 grant to the United Way of Taiwan for reconstruction of damage caused to the island by Typhoon Morakot.
