Tokyo, November 10, 2010 - In a celebration of volunteerism, UPS (NYSE:UPS) employees and their families worldwide contributed their time to volunteer activities during the company's 8th annual Global Volunteer Month. In the Asia Pacific Region, 21,800 hours were donated by 4,700 employees and families.
"Each October, UPS encourages its employees around the world to make a positive impact in their communities by donating their time and talents to people and organizations in need. This year in Asia Pacific, UPS employees will work to address a range of important issues, including poverty, community safety, and environmental conservation, among others," said Derek Woodward, president of UPS's Asia Pacific Region. "UPS has always placed great importance on supporting the communities we serve through volunteer activities and other charitable initiatives."
In Japan, UPS mobilized more than 100 employees and their families who donated 400 hours of service to projects such as beach and river clean-up in Tokyo and Kanagawa, acorn saplings maintenance at Meiji Shrine Forest in Tokyo, community cleaning activities in Nagoya, Hiroshima, and Okayama, organizing computer classes and playing sports with children at child welfare facilities in Tokyo and Osaka, and maintenance of bamboo in Yokohama.
Last year, UPS employees and their family members contributed more than 1.2 million hours of volunteer service worldwide, with more than 170,000 hours of their donated time occurring during Global Volunteer Month.
