Stresses Importance of Supply Chain Management
In Preparation for Economic Rebound

Tokyo, December 4, 2009 - UPS Japan President Yoshiki Mizokuchi underscored the importance of supply chain management as economies recover from the recession during his recent address to approximately 600 students at the Academic Lecture of Kansai University Faculty of Commerce. In his speech, Mizokuchi highlighted the need for businesses to build on their strengths and use these advantages to prepare for the economic rebound.

"Businesses should not just wait for the economy to recover, but take action now and adapt more quickly to changes in the market," said Mizokuchi. He emphasized the importance of carefully listening to customers' needs and offering the best solutions, continuously investing in core business capabilities, and building alliances that allow companies to focus resources on its core business.

According to Mizokuchi, aside from having a geographical advantage of being situated in ever-growing Asia, Japanese businesses must also leverage on its strong points of having high employee loyalty, and a well-educated and skilled workforce. Japan's manufacturing industry has developed a strong foothold globally with its 'hands-on policy'.

He also explained the importance of supply chain management by citing a UPS case study in the book "The World is Flat" by Thomas Friedman about a major Japanese PC manufacturer who was able to greatly improve operational efficiency and customer satisfaction by outsourcing its laptop PC maintenance service to UPS.

Mizokuchi said, "As the world reels from the financial crisis, many businesses are reviewing their operations, including logistics. As the world trade recovers and grows, supply chain will become more complex. In its more than 100-year history, UPS has changed its business model according to the needs of the market. UPS, with our extensive portfolio of transportation and logistics solutions, is in a unique position to help our customers get beyond this challenging period. We will continue to stay focused on helping our customers grow and better manage their business."
