UPS Delivered 150,000 Volunteer Hours to Communities Across the Globe in "Global Volunteer Month"
Press Release

TOKYO, November 12, 2009 - Over 30,000 UPS employees and their families worldwide contributed almost 150,000 volunteer hours during the company's 7th annual "Global Volunteer Month" in October. In Asia, UPS mobilised over 4,000 employees and their families to volunteer over 18,000 hours helping to improve their local community's education, living conditions and environment.

"UPS continues to make community involvement a top priority," said Derek Woodward, President of UPS Asia Pacific Region. "We hope our long-standing commitment to volunteerism continues to deliver and answer the needs of the very communities we live and work in."

This year, volunteer efforts are largely in the company's primary areas of focus: community safety, non-profit effectiveness, the environmental sustainability, economic and global literacy and diversity.  This allowed UPS volunteers to effectively apply their work expertise and address vital community needs.

In Japan, UPS mobilised over 100 employees and their families who donated 400 hours of service to projects such as acorn saplings maintenance at Meiji Shrine Forest in Tokyo, community cleaning activities in Hiroshima, Okayama, and Kagawa, playing sports with children at a foster group home in Osaka, and maintenance of bamboo in Yokohama.

Since its founding in 1907, UPS has built a legacy as a caring and responsible corporate citizen. Whether through involvement with United Way, The UPS Foundation or volunteerism, UPS provides assistance to programmes that address social and community issues. UPS is currently providing the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) with disaster relief operations support to areas affected by the flood in the Philippines and by the earthquake in Padang, Indonesia. The UPS foundation has also made a US$48,200 grant to the United Way of Taiwan for reconstruction of damage caused to the island by Typhoon Morakot.

"Volunteerism is something that binds us together as a company and makes us stronger," said Scott Davis, UPS chairman and CEO.  "I firmly believe that people prefer to do business with, and work for, companies that act responsibly and care about the communities they serve."
