UPS Gives Back to Communities Across Asia
Press Release

Over 3,000 Employees to volunteer 14,000 hours of service across the region

Tokyo, November 12, 2008 -- The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS (NYSE: UPS), made a donation of over USD 40,000 to Foster Group Home, "Kodomo No Sato (The Home for Children)" in Osaka on November 5, 2008.

Kodomo No Sato/The Home for Children was started in 1978 as a private after-school day-care center, in order to provide a healthy environment for children in Kamagasaki and to let them play freely.  In 1996 the City of Osaka authorized Kodomo no Sato as a municipal Home for Children. In 2001 the City of Osaka has designated it as a Foster Group-Home and as Emergency Temporary Lodging. Now with a support from Catholic Archdiocese of Osaka, Kodomo No Sato is open for children as a place to play and to live for all year round.

The UPS Foundation was established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, GA., the Foundation identifies specific areas where its backing clearly impact social issues. In May this year, The UPS Foundation made a cash donation of US$500,000 to the American Red Cross in support of Red Cross earthquake response efforts in Chengdu, and pledged an additional US$500,000 for in-kind support to aid the delivery of relief supplies. The UPS Foundation also pledged US$200,000 to CARE, the international humanitarian organization, to support its efforts to deliver aid to Myanmar in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Nargis.

The UPS Foundation also organizes UPS Global Volunteer Month, takes place over the month of October in the Asia Pacific region. UPS mobilized over 3,000 employees and volunteered 14,000 hours of service to charity and community work.

"The idea of giving back to the community through volunteerism is something that is engrained in the corporate culture at UPS," said Derek Woodward, President of UPS Asia Pacific Region. "Having been in Asia for two decades now, we know how deep the needs run in this region, and we want to be able to make a difference, no matter how big or small, through our voluntary efforts."

Local UPS employees choose their own projects in conjunction with Global Volunteer Month. In Japan, over 100 UPS employees and their families offered almost 400 hours of service to projects including:

  • Acorn sapling arrangement and offering foreign language guided tour for tourists at Meiji Shrine Forest in Tokyo
  • Helping charity bazaar hosted by YWCA in Nagoya
  • Cleaning at Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima
  • Playing outdoor games and sports with children at a foster group home in Osaka
  • Conducting PC classes at a children nursing home in Tokyo

UPS's Global Volunteer Month first began in 2003 as a seven-day community service initiative with 1,000 volunteers. This year, UPS had 30,000 employees participating worldwide through volunteerism.

This year's program in other Asian countries included volunteer efforts such as:

  • 100 UPSers cleaning, painting, repairing doors, making book shelves, providing nutritious food and organizing educational games for an elementary school in Jakarta, Indonesia.
  • Over 320 volunteers engaging in a clean-up activity in two lakeshore towns and participating in a brief simulation as part of the Community Forum in the Philippines.
  • Providing meal services to children and the elderly of low income families, and taking orphans and disadvantaged children on an excursion to the Children's Museum in Seoul.
  • Over 80 volunteers in Thailand planting mangrove trees along the coast in Samaesarn district, and cleaning up Samaesarn island.
