UPS is recognized by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency
(Tokyo, 22 May 2007) UPS has recently been recognized for its contribution toward the successful launch of the Solar Physics Satellite Hinode from Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). UPS provided international air freight delivery and related logistics support for the Hinode, and was acknowledged for its achievement.
During the remaining time till the satellite launch date, the mission for UPS was to handle the special delivery and import and export customs clearance smoothly using its logistics expertise, so scientists of JAXA and other countries could concentrate on the development of the scientific instruments. Also UPS will keep in close contact with scientists from JAXA and other countries and provide consultation upon the most suitable logistics that reflects their exact needs.
The Hinode project is an international cooperative project involving Japan, US, and UK's governmental research institutes, where design and construction of the scientific instruments loaded on the satellite were done through an integrated effort. The mission operation and the observed data analysis arealso being carried out with an integrated effort. The Satellite has taken more than 6 years to develop, and was finally launched from Uchinoura Space Center (Kagoshima-prefecture, Japan) in September 2006. The project was lead by the Institute of Space and Aeronautical Science, JAXA.
"The development of the satellite that contributes to further flourish space and astronautical science can only be done with close cooperation and gathering of state-of-the-art technology so that the project is truly global in scale. During the development process, quite a number of delicate instruments were transported between Japan and overseas. Without a smooth, safe and reliable international delivery and customs clearance, both the satellite development and the Sun's scientific analysis based on useful data sent by the satellite would not have been realized", said Associate Professor Dr. Toshifumi Shimizu, with Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, JAXA.
"We are extremely happy to be part of such an exciting project involving the scientific analysis and observation of the Sun which poses great impact to the environment of our planet. We are honored to receive recognition for our team's work," said Yoshiki Mizokuchi, President and Representative Director, UPS Supply Chain Solution (Japan).
About Solar Physics Satellite Hinode (SOLAR-B) SOLAR-B satellite is the third Solar Physics Satellite of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, succeeding satellite SOLAR-A Yohkoh, which successfully completed its mission with the collaborative effort of Japan, US and UK. The satellite consists of a coordinated set of optical, X-ray and EUV telescopes. The satellite aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the Sun's corona activities. Specifications: Weight: Approx 900 kg, Length: Approx 4meters, Orbit: 600km circular orbit (Sun-synchronous).
