Improves Access To Asia for Japanese Business
TOKYO, May 20, 2008 -- UPS (NYSE:UPS) has added five weekly flights from the U.S. to Nagoya to enhance customer service to Japan's Chubu region, a major industrial manufacturing center, and better connect Japan with Shanghai and the rapidly growing economy of eastern China.
"The start of UPS flights to Nagoya will allow UPS to gain an even stronger foothold in Japan and increase transportation options for the various industries in Chubu," said Dan Brutto, president, UPS International. "With our diverse product portfolio and worldwide network, UPS is well-positioned to support Japanese businesses interested in trading in global markets."
The Chubu area of Japan hosts large multi-nationals and small- and mid-sized businesses in a variety of industries including machinery, transportation equipment, aerospace and automobiles.
The new flights are the result of a U.S.-Japan aviation agreement signed in September 2007, which granted UPS the authority to operate daily flights between the U.S. and Nagoya in addition to its daily services to Tokyo and Osaka. UPS will operate five weekly MD-11 flights from Anchorage through Nagoya's Central Japan International Airport before heading to Shanghai in China.
Later this year, UPS will become the first U.S. carrier to open an air hub in China at Shanghai's Pudong Airport. This latest UPS initiative thus will greatly improve Chubu's access to Asia, especially to the Chinese market. Nagoya will be the tenth city to be linked to Shanghai by UPS aircraft. The other cities are Anchorage, Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Clark (Philippines), Beijing, Qingdao, Cologne and Warsaw.
