The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS (NYSE: UPS), has donated US$10,000 to Second Harvest Japan (2HJ), a nonprofit organization that provides food to those in need.
2HJ started its activities in 2000 with an aim to provide safe and nutritious food to people in need. It was registered as a nonprofit organization in 2002, and currently receives food donations from about 650 companies and distributes them to about 500 charitable agencies all over Japan.
As part of its disaster relief activities, 2HJ has been delivering food packages to people in Minami Sanriku Town in Miyagi every week since June. In this project, 2HJ distributes packages containing items such as rice, miso, soy sauce, condiments, dried food, and snacks, to about 1,400 households living in temporary houses. The grant by UPS will also be used to support this activity.
In March, The UPS Foundation pledged $1 million in relief funds earmarked for in-kind transportation of emergency supplies and financial support. The relationship with 2HJ deepened as UPS provided transportation support for their disaster relief supplies in May. In October, UPS employees volunteered at 2HJ's weekly soup kitchen in Ueno Park in Tokyo.
"In addition to the transportation support, we are pleased to be able to contribute to the disaster relief efforts with our grant through 2HJ. We hope to continue our support in various means including volunteer activities," said Masato Umeno, president of UPS Japan.
