Over 550 UPS Employees Commit to Community Service in India
India, November 9, 2009 - UPS (NYSE:UPS) employees and their families worldwide have donated almost 150,000 volunteer hours, driven by the company's 7th Annual "Global Volunteer Month" in October. In Asia, UPS has mobilized over 4,000 employees to volunteer over 18,000 hours helping locals improve their community's education, living conditions and environment. This year in India, over 550 UPS employees have contributed almost 3,500 volunteer hours.
"At UPS, community involvement remains a top priority for us. We firmly believe in giving back to the society that we live and operate in." said Pirojshaw Sarkari, Managing Director, UPS Jetair Express Pvt. Ltd. "This annual endeavour is reflective of our longstanding commitment towards volunteerism. With this, we hope to enrich the lives of communities and help them prosper", he concluded.
This year, volunteer efforts have been largely in the company's primary areas of focus: community safety, non-profit effectiveness, the environment, economic and global literacy and diversity. This has allowed UPS volunteers to effectively apply their work expertise and address vital community needs.
In India, UPS employees donated hands-on time and efforts towards the following causes across the country:
- In Mumbai, UPS volunteers contributed 1,052 volunteer hours at various NGOs across the city. This included The National Association of Disabled's Enterprises (NADE), Cheshire Home and both branches of Door Step School. They helped in cleaning and organizing the furniture and computer systems. They also conducted interactive song and dance sessions with the children, and taught them the art of colouring traditional lamps and creating greeting cards for Diwali.
- In Delhi, UPS employees along with their family members and AFL employees laid the foundation for a new relationship with the children of Prayas Welfare Social Society. They organized a drawing competition for the children to showcase their talent in art. They also entertained the children with an interactive activity, which included a magic show interspersed with a variety of engaging games. In all, they made a significant contribution of 1,414 volunteer hours.
- In Chennai, UPS employees contributed 267 volunteer hours by interacting and spending quality time with the residents of New Life Charity Trust and Shiri Saradha Sakth Peedam. Different groups engaged in interactive activities with children such as competitions for drawing, singing and dancing, followed by a prize-giving ceremony for the winners.
- In Hyderabad, UPS employees accompanied by AFL employees began a new relationship with the National Institute of the Mentally Handicapped by helping to clean the institute's garden, contributing 90 volunteer hours collectively.
- Other cities that were covered as part of this philanthropic gesture by UPS include Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Ludhiana, Moradabad, Pune, Cochin and Tirupur
Last year, UPS volunteers from India contributed over 2,600 volunteer hours
To encourage even greater employee participation this year, The UPS Foundation will donate US$100,000 through an employee contest. Ten UPS employees will be picked to win a US$10,000 charitable contribution for the non-profit agencies at which they volunteer during Global Volunteer Month.
"Since its founding in 1907, UPS has built a legacy as a caring and responsible corporate citizen. Whether through involvement with United Way, The UPS Foundation or volunteerism, UPS provides assistance to programmes that address social and community issues. UPS is currently providing the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) with disaster relief operations support to areas affected by the flood in the Philippines and by the earthquake in Padang, Indonesia. The UPS foundation has also made a US$48,200 grant to the United Way of Taiwan for reconstruction of damage caused to the island by Typhoon Morakot."
"Volunteerism is something that binds us together as a company and makes us stronger," said Scott Davis, UPS Chairman and CEO. "I firmly believe that people prefer to do business with, and work for companies that act responsibly and care about the communities they serve."
