Thirty-seven UPS service providers commended for more than a decade of safe driving
HONG KONG, Dec. 28, 2010 - UPS (NYSE:UPS) held its 30th Hong Kong safe driving recognition event to honor 37 service providers who each have more than 15 years of safe driving. Four service providers were specially recognized for achieving a record of more than 20 years of driving without a single accident. UPS considers employee training to be highly important as part of its commitment to create a safe driving environment for pedestrians and other drivers on the road.
"Safety is a top priority at UPS and we want to ensure our employees and the communities we serve stay safe," said Derek Woodward, president of UPS Asia Pacific Region. "In Asia, we will continue to provide a safe and reliable service to our customers."

In Hong Kong, UPS has a daily Pre-work Communication Meeting (PCM) each morning where supervisors share safety tips, best practices, accident rate updates and case studies with all service providers. Annual refresher trainings and assessments are mandatory for maintaining the quality of safe driving at UPS, including:
- Safe Work Methods Training: To provide safe work methods to employees for keeping all equipment in safe working order;
- Defensive Driving Course Training: To reduce risk associated with driving by helping drivers to anticipate dangerous situations and to identify road hazards;
- 10 Commentary Checklist: To identify safe driving techniques for reducing the risk of auto accidents;
- Employee Safety Trainer Assessment (ESTA) Certification: To ensure the quality of the Safe Work Methods Training via an internal auditing process;
- Vehicle Safety Trainer Assessment (VSTA): To ensure the quality of auto safety training and on-site monitoring via an internal auditing process; and
- Five Seeing Habits: To provide five tips to keep service providers alert and aware of their surroundings.
"It is important to follow the safe driving guidelines, and the training UPS gives service providers is very useful," said Yip Kin Sing, a Safe Driving Award recipient and safety spokesperson and trainer for his fellow colleagues. "I tell other service providers to always be patient on the road. Although we are busy every day, we should always bear in mind that safety comes first."
To ensure safe driving practices across Asia, UPS conducts surprise audits on service providers to check their driving habits. Supervisors also conduct safety checks by riding with the service providers to observe their driving habits.
