UPS Delivers Resources To Strengthen Effectiveness Of NGO Executives
Press Release

Collaboration with Hong Kong Council of Social Service Helps Nurture Future NGO Leaders

Hong Kong, November 23, 2009 - UPS announced today that its charitable arm, The UPS Foundation, has contributed US$50,000 (approx. HK$390,000) to the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS). The grant will be used to develop and implement an executive development program to groom potential executives for leadership positions among Hong Kong's non-government organisations (NGOs).

HKCSS's first-ever "NGO Executives Development Program" is a 100- hour training program that aims to groom 25 potential executives from various NGOs in Hong Kong.

"We have more than 50,000 NGO practitioners in Hong Kong working in over 400 social service agencies. Among the 2,000 senior executives, we are seeing a turnover rate of over 10% last year due to retirement and other reasons. Senior practitioners are actually facing much greater challenges than ever. The increasing complexity of social problems due to the changing social and economic environment, rising public expectation in governance, use of resources and service performance, etc are imposing higher pressure to our committed practitioners. We hope the executive development program will help to identify and nurture future leaders among NGOs, at the same time, encourage better succession planning within the organizations in order to meet the needs and expectation of our stakeholders," said Ms. Christine Fang, Chief Executive of HKCSS.

"One of the new key focuses of The UPS Foundation is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of NGOs across the world," said KK Leung, Managing Director, UPS Hong Kong and Macau. "Following our Global Volunteer Month in October, we are delighted to collaborate with HKCSS on this strategic endeavour."

"The last 18 months have been highly challenging for many NGOs as they struggle to raise funds and meet burgeoning demand for assistance and support from members of the public. While it is important to alleviate poverty and address the needs of impoverished members of our community, it is imperative for NGOs to improve their effectiveness and operate consistently at the highest standards," added Leung.

To be launched in December this year, and running from January 2009 to May 2010, the five-month "NGO Executives Development Program" will be structured around nine different themes including the establishment of a leadership role, strategic thinking, decision making and communication, managing people, financial management for NGOs, governance of an NGO, NGO branding, marketing and resources mobilization, crisis Management, social innovation and organisational change; and personal growth and stress management. A group of UPS employee volunteers will be invited as guest speakers to share their business expertise in selected modules of the training program.

Founded in 1951, The UPS Foundation has grown to be a philanthropic leader recognised for its generosity and impact. Today, its distinctive approach to philanthropy impacts communities around the world and supports the committed engagement of over 400,000 UPS employees.
