UPS Asia Pacific Delivers Over 18,000 Volunteer Hours to Asian Communities
Press Release

Over 4,000 UPS Employees Commit to Community Work in Asia

HONG KONG, Nov. 2, 2009 - UPS (NYSE:UPS) UPS employees and their families worldwide donated almost 150,000 volunteer hours, driven by the company's 7th annual "Global Volunteer Month" in October. In Asia, UPS mobilised over 4,000 employees to volunteer over 18,000 hours helping locals improve their community's education, living conditions and environment.

"UPS continues to make community involvement a top priority," said Derek Woodward, President of UPS Asia Pacific Region. "We hope our long-standing commitment to volunteerism will deliver and answer the needs of the very communities we live and work in."

This year, volunteer efforts concentrated largely in the company's primary areas of focus: community safety, non-profit effectiveness, the environment, economic/global literacy and diversity.  This allowed UPS volunteers to effectively apply their work expertise and address vital community needs.

"Through our daily contact with the community, we can understand the needs of the society. By involving our staff and their families as volunteers, we encourage one another to contribute in making a difference to the community and creating a better future for the next generation," said KK Leung, Managing Director of UPS Hong Kong and Macau.

In Hong Kong, UPS mobilised 350 employees and their families to participate in more than eight community activities, including the Organic Banana Tree Caring Day with New Life Farm. Following the success of last year's UPS Greening Day, UPS Hong Kong continued its involvement with New Life Farm this year, where 140 volunteers ploughed, fertilized and made tools to help promote sustainable farming. Another initiative "Caring Cookies Express" was organized where 59 UPS employees and their families spent time with intellectually handicapped persons from Fu Hong Society to play games and bake cookies. The cookies were then distributed to members of the NGO, including the elderly at Fu Hong Society Yi Lok and Si Lok adult training center. A total of 177 volunteer hours were contributed in this memorable and meaningful event as the handmade cookies was shared with the community.

To encourage even greater employee participation this year, The UPS Foundation donated US$100,000 through an employee contest. Ten UPS employees would be picked to win a US$10,000 charitable contribution for the non-profit agencies they volunteered at during Global Volunteer Month.

Since its founding in 1907, UPS has built a legacy as a caring and responsible corporate citizen. Whether through involvement with United Way, The UPS Foundation or volunteerism, UPS provides assistance to programmes that address social and community issues. UPS is currently providing the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) with disaster relief operations support to areas affected by the flood in the Philippines and by the earthquake in Padang, Indonesia. The UPS foundation has also made a US$48,200 grant to the United Way of Taiwan for reconstruction of damage caused to the island by Typhoon Morakot.

"Volunteerism is something that binds us together as a company and makes us stronger," said Scott Davis, UPS Chairman and CEO.  "I firmly believe that people prefer to do business with, and work for, companies that act responsibly and care about the communities they serve."
