Hub Ready to Support Intra-Asia Trade Growth
HONG KONG, May 18, 2010--UPS (NYSE:UPS) today announced the official opening of its Shenzhen Asia Pacific hub at Shenzhen Baoan International Airport, aimed at accelerating the flow of customers' packages and heavy freight throughout the Asia Pacific region. Located in the strategic Pearl River region and adjacent to Hong Kong, the UPS Shenzhen hub will improve shipment time in transit for shippers in China and throughout the region.
With an initial investment of 180 million USD, the 89,000-square-meter site is UPS' largest facility in Asia and demonstrates UPS' commitment to improving service for its customers and fostering trade in China and the Asia Pacific region.
"The rapid expansion of intra-Asia trade has resulted in a need for a package and freight service provider with the speed and capacity necessary to support the region's unparalleled growth," said Derek Woodward, President of UPS Asia Pacific Region. "In building this facility in Shenzhen, UPS is also recognizing the importance of China to the growth of the Asia Pacific region."
Speaking at the official opening ceremony, guest-of-honor Zhang Siping, Vice Mayor of Shenzhen, said, "The UPS Shenzhen Asia Pacific Hub is a key milestone in Shenzhen's aviation history. I also believe it will play a significant role in advancing Shenzhen's air logistics industry, and in accelerating the economic development of Shenzhen as well as the Pearl River Delta region."
With a package sorting capacity of 18,000 pieces per hour, which can be expanded to 36,000 pieces per hour, the UPS Shenzhen Asia Pacific hub is being positioned as a one-stop shop solution to meet the logistics requirements of UPS's customers.
Realizing the need to balance strict package inspection with speed and efficiency, UPS collaborated with Shenzhen Customs to jointly develop a risk management system that enhances the customs clearance process while ensuring rigorous supervision during shipment declaration, inspection and release. Express cross-border clearance has been put in place at the Hong Kong/Shenzhen highway port to facilitate shipments between Hong Kong and the Shenzhen hub. This will help reduce traveling time and cost when connecting with the Hong Kong airport.
"China has always been UPS' top international priority," affirmed Daniel Brutto, President, UPS International. "The new Shenzhen Asia Pacific hub is yet another testament of our long-term commitment to China and to our customers throughout the region. We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from the Shenzhen municipal government and Shenzhen Baoan International Airport, without which today's event would not have been possible."
