The UPS Foundation Delivers US$1.83 Million In Grants To Over 74 Asia Pacific Charities In 2009
Press Release

Hong Kong, February 2, 2010 - The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS [NYSE: UPS], provided grants totaling US$1.83 million in support of over 74 charitable organizations in Asia Pacific in 2009, including three in Hong Kong.

The grants in 2009 supported initiatives that launched a nationwide innovation initiative for university students, empowered people with autism and their families, restored the smiles of children with cleft lips and cleft palates through reconstructive surgery, and supported disaster relief efforts.

"In 2009, UPS led the industry in providing monetary and logistical support to NGOs in Asia Pacific and around the world," said Derek Woodward, President of UPS Asia Pacific Region. "In addition to providing financial aid and relief assistance to communities affected by natural disasters, UPS employees also actively participated in volunteerism activities to give back to the communities where we operate in."

Last year, The UPS Foundation announced a series of grants that supported relief organizations for disaster victims in the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan and American Samoa:

  • The UPS Foundation contributed US$50,000 (approx. HK$390,000) to the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS). The grant was used to develop and implement HKCSS's first-ever "NGO Executives Development Program", a 100- hour training program that aims to groom 25 potential executives from various NGOs in Hong Kong and enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of NGOs in Hong Kong.
  • Following the success of UPS Greening Day in 2008, UPS Hong Kong continued its involvement with New Life Farm in 2009, where 140 volunteers ploughed, fertilized and made tools to help promote sustainable farming. The UPS Foundation donated US$15,566 (approx. HK$121,400) for this initiative.
  • UPS Hong Kong celebrated the International Balloon Day with TREATS and a team of professional balloon artists, in hope to raise funds and provide better service to mentally disabled children and promoting social integration in a diverse community. The UPS Foundation contributed US $15,436 (approx HK$120,400) to TREATS.

The UPS Foundation also designated October as Global Volunteer Month where UPS employees volunteered with various charities in their local communities. Last year, 4,592 UPS employees in Asia Pacific contributed a total of 20,970 hours in 156 local Global Volunteer Month events in the region. The 2009 volunteer hours are 15 percent higher compared to the 18,184 volunteer hours recorded in 2008.
