Reference Tracking FAQ

What is a shipment reference?
A shipment reference is an identifier that you define by completing the "reference" fields during the shipping process. This reference could be a purchase order (PO) number, a customer number, a company name, a Bill of Lading number, or a phrase that identifies that shipment -- such as "10 crates" or "gift for Mom." Shipment references can be any combination of letters and numbers up to 35 characters.

How do I narrow my search?
More than one shipper may use a particular purchase order number or the phrase "10 widgets" as a reference. When you track by reference, you can narrow the search for your particular shipment using additional qualifiers.

  • Shipment Type: Select whether the shipment is a package or freight.
  • Ship Date Range: By entering more restrictive from and to dates, you narrow the search to dates closer to your shipment. The default is four weeks before today's date.
  • UPS Account Number: Adding the shipper's UPS Account Number defines the shipment.
  • Origin Country: You can enter the origin country by selecting it from the drop-down list (available for freight shipments only).
  • Origin Postal/ZIP Code: Inserting a specific ZIP Code (U.S.) or postal code (international destination) also narrows the search (available for freight shipments only).
  • Destination Country: Select the destination country from the drop-down list.
  • Destination Postal/ZIP Code: Inserting a specific ZIP Code (U.S.) or postal code (international destination) also narrows the search.

Are there other ways to track my UPS shipments?
Yes. You may also track your shipments by their UPS tracking number -- either online or by e-mail. If you are a registered My UPS user, you can import tracking numbers from a spreadsheet application and UPS will e-mail you the results or save them to a data file.
