UPS Reloaded "Global Volunteer Month"

October 20, 2008, Beijing - In October, the UPS Global Volunteer Week (GVW), which has been conducted for 5 successive years, was officially renamed the UPS Global Volunteer Month (GVM). Just as the name implies, the event aimed at enhancing volunteer culture worldwide was extended from the previous week to a month. All UPSers, regardless of their locations, ages and positions, continuously participate in various commonweal events in the whole 31 days to open a new chapter in the history of UPS in pro bono public services. As estimated, total 800 of volunteers in China and 30,000 of volunteers worldwide will join the GVM in 2008, and 2,400 hour volunteer hours will be accumulatively devoted, respectively.

Richard Loi, Senior Vice President of UPS Asia and the Head of China joined UPS China employees in the GVM and said: "UPSers have been conducting various volunteer services for the community. The reason why we changed the GVW to GVM is because we hope to allow UPSers and their families in every city could spend more time on volunteer activities with extended timeline. The spirit of volunteerism is not a short-term or long-term activity, but an idea and pursuit. UPS GVM program is aimed to promote the culture of public volunteer. I believe more and more enterprises will join us to note this philosophy and start practicing."

Sichuan province, which is under reconstruction after the earthquake disaster, is the first to conduct the GVM activity. On Oct. 8th, 11 volunteers from UPS Sichuan visited the reconstructed school after the earthquake, Ziyan Elementary School at Mianzhu, Sichuan Province, to play games with and perform shows for kids there to dissipate the sorrow of disaster with laughter. In order to allow students to enjoy better education resources, UPS employees also voluntarily brought many books. Staff from UPS technical department also helped to upgrade the computer system in the school.

More volunteers from UPS Sichuan will visit the Earthquake Rehabilitation Center at Huaxi Hospital to present their gifts to the injured victims of the earthquake who are under rehabilitation. At the same time, volunteers from UPS Guangzhou attended the earthquake crisis special training with the students of Huangshi High School in Guangzhou.

In other major cities in China, UPS has initiated, is initiating or will initiate a series of volunteer activities. In Shanghai, UPS volunteers spent a happy weekend with the children of the Shanghai Guangci Orphanage with warmth and caring. Before the International Day for the Blind on Oct. 14th, volunteers from UPS Beijing invited dozens of blind people from the Beijing Hongdandan Education and Culture Exchange Center to pay a visit to the Summer Palace. Volunteers led them in appreciating with their hands the various plants and the unseen beauty and delicacy of waterside pavilions in the park. During the whole process, some of the volunteers covered their eyes to experience what it would be like to be blind.
