UPS Launches New Technology Tool to Give Importers More Control
Press Release

Beijing, August 9, 2010 - UPS (NYSE:UPS) today launched UPS Import ControlSM, a new technology tool that puts control over inbound logistics and costs in the hands of the importer, no longer limiting that right to the exporter. The new service reduces delays to the shipping process due to incorrect or incomplete customs declaration documentation, and gives importers the ability to remove the commercial invoice after customs clearance when shipping directly to end-customers.

Richard Loi, Head of UPS China and Senior Vice President for UPS Asia Pacific Region, said, "UPS has always been committed to providing excellent service to our customers in China. As our newest import shipment solution offering, UPS Import ControlSM allows our import customers greater control over the shipment process. Customers can now elect to have a shipment's commercial invoice removed prior to delivery, ensuring that their end-customer doesn't receive cost of goods information. This new tool will also bring our Chinese import customers greater convenience and a better service experience."

With UPS Import Control, importers can process an import shipment through UPS shipping systems, CampusShip® and Internet Shipping on ups.com. They can generate shipping labels and commercial invoices for a small package import shipment and forward those materials to the international shipper (exporter). The importer can even dispatch a UPS courier to prepare the documents and collect the shipment.

Users can store up to 75 tracking numbers at a time and access quick links to calculate time and cost and process shipments on ups.com. RSS feeds can also be customized. Enhancements to UPS Widget include proactive notifications, color coding for quick viewing of shipment status and the ability for users to unlock different characters through UPS promotions. This version is now also available to MAC users.

Import Control overcomes three major pain points that importers often face:

First, in most shipping situations, the exporter or supplier takes control over the shipping and passes the cost back to the importer. This can lead to incorrect service levels and result in additional costs.

Second, with most commercial invoices being prepared by the exporter, importers have no control over the documentation. Shipments delayed at customs because of incorrect or incomplete commercial invoices may also incur additional expenses when the documents are updated.

An incorrect commercial invoice could also lead to incorrect harmonization codes and additional duties and taxes. Although the mistake could be made by the exporter, in most cases, it will be the importer who will pay for the mistake.

Lastly, in some cases, importers authorise their suppliers to use their shipping account, which could lead to misuse of the account.

With UPS Import Control, the importer assumes responsibility in setting service levels, arranging for pickups and ensuring that the documentation is accurate. Moreover, importers no longer need to share their shipping account details with their suppliers.

UPS Import Control is available to all UPS account holders using UPS CampusShip and Internet Shipping tools on ups.com.
