UPS Expected to Deliver More Than 19 Million Items for the Beijing Olympics
Press Release

Shipping Giant Ready to Support BOCOG in All Logistics and Shipping Needs During the Games

BEIJING, August 11 2008 - UPS announced today that it expects to deliver more than 19 million items for the Beijing Olympic Games, which began last Friday, August 8. This includes all of the Games-related equipment and support materials that will be used at the competition venues, ranging from tennis balls and canoes to computers and scoreboards.

UPS, the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Sponsor of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, is operating from the Olympic Logistics Centre (OLC), the central logistics and distribution hub where the company is managing the warehousing, inventory control and delivery of nearly everything going in and out of the competition venues, non-competition venues and other independent training locations. Comprised of four warehouses spanning 2 million square feet, the OLC is UPS's largest single customer facility in Asia. UPS already has delivered 10.6 million items in preparation for the Olympics. In the two weeks prior to the Games, UPS handled 320,000 items per day and anticipates delivering another 4 million items throughout the 16 days of the Summer Games.

"Since we began preparing for the Games, UPS has processed more than 10,000 tons of Olympics-related equipment, equivalent to approximately one and one-half times the weight of the steel frame used in the Water Cube, the iconic structure where most of the indoor aquatic events will be conducted," said Scott Davis, Chairman and CEO, UPS. "Throughout the Games, we are running at full speed with about 2,000 people serving on the UPS Olympic operations team."

Added Yan Ligang, Director of the Logistics Department, BOCOG: "UPS has been a committed and highly dedicated partner of BOCOG throughout the intense preparations for the Games. Their expertise, professionalism and ability to handle complex logistical tasks were exemplified by their management of the colossal Olympic boat deliveries. This clearly demonstrated the strength of UPS's global network and I am delighted to say that the boats arrived in prime condition for the athletes to prepare for the upcoming competition."

UPS delivered 254 canoes, kayaks and row boats on behalf of 61 National Olympic Committees through four hub points across Europe.

Other points of interest:

  • UPS is operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week providing service throughout the Olympic Villages, the OLC, and other locations.
  • At its peak, UPS will have 217 trucks and package vans dedicated to servicing the Games.
  • The largest shipment to date: boat frames at 58.75 cubic meters
  • The smallest shipment: commemorative pins and flash disks

During the Games, UPS is responsible for all express delivery and transportation services for accredited areas including the venues, the Olympic Green, the Athletes' Village and the Press Village. The range of services provided by UPS covers the shipment of competition equipment and the movement of time-sensitive film footage and photographic materials. UPS is also responsible for all reverse-logistics during the post-Games period and logistics for the Paralympic Games.
