UPS Donates to the China Administration of Sports for Persons with Disabilities
[July 7, 2008 - Beijing, China] UPS (NYSE: UPS), the official Logistics and Express Delivery Sponsor for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, today announced its USD100,000 (RMB 690,000) donation to the China Administration of Sports for Persons with Disabilities (CASPD) to support the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. This move demonstrates the company's commitment to help the BOCOG deliver the most successful Olympic Games and to support Chinese athletes with disabilities.
The donation includes two guide dogs to facilitate athletic training and offer daily support for vision-impaired athletes, which will allow them to devote more time and energy to their athletic career. Additionally, UPS donated an ambulance to provide quick, high quality care for the athletes, minimizing the impact of sports injuries and ensuring top physical condition of the players. This is the only ambulance donated to the CASPD by an enterprise in China.
"The Paralympic Games are an excellent opportunity for athletes with disabilities around the world to showcase their abilities and fulfill their dreams by inspiring the world with their accomplishments," said Mr. Wang Binyang, Deputy Director of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games Department of the BOCOG. He continued, "We are delighted to receive UPS' donation and appreciate their support for Chinese Paralympics athletes. It will undoubtedly help us deliver 'Two Olympic Games, Equally Brilliant' in 2008."
One of the two guide dogs, Lucky, has been training for 7 months and has begun working and living with Ms. Ping Yali, the retired vision-impaired long-jump athlete who won the first gold medal at the Paralympic Games for China. Star, the other dog, has been training for 8 months and will be working and living with Mr. Li Duan, the vision-impaired long-jump athlete for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games who won two gold medals at the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games.
Addressing the CASPD's urgent need for medical aid facilities, UPS donated the ambulance to improve the organization's ability to care for trained athletes. Called a "moving ICU (Intensive Care Unit)," the vehicle provides electrocardiographic monitoring, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, central oxygen supply, sterilization in vehicle, an automatic loading-and-unloading stretcher, and an Uninterruptible Power Supply for 24 hours.
"We aim to advocate the indomitable spirit of these athletes during the Paralympic Games. We also hope more enterprises, like UPS, will support people with disabilities, especially athletes," said Jia Yong, member of the China Disabled Persons' Federation, director of Sports Department and director of the CASPD.
"As the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Sponsor of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, UPS is leveraging its network, resources and experience to help the BOCOG successfully host the 2008 Games and the Paralympic Games," said Joseph Guerrisi, Vice President of Marketing for UPS Asia Pacific Region. "This devotion is not limited to the Olympic Games, but it is also applied to the Paralympic Games. We are honored to support these athletes and will continue to increase awareness for the Paralympic movement among corporations and the community."
The UPS Foundation, the company's charitable arm provided the grant.
