UPS INTRODUCES ELECTRIC CAR FOR FAST AND ECOLOGICAL DELIVERIES

UPS’s electric car is the only one of its kind in Chile.

Santiago, October 18, 2001 – United Parcel Service (UPS), the world’s largest express delivery company, is expanding its fleet by introducing an electric car in Chile. With this new addition, UPS contributes to alleviating traffic and air pollution problems in downtown Santiago.

The new electric automobile, the only one of its kind in Chile, was chosen mainly due to its environmentally friendly characteristics. The vehicle allows UPS to provide service to the downtown area during the peak traffic hours when gas engine vehicles are prohibited.

"We are very pleased with this vehicle because it eases the delivery process in the congested streets of Santiago," said José García, country manager, UPS Chile. The UPS executive added that the objective of this investment is "to adapt to the needs of the local market, while remaining consistent with our policies of respect for the environment and high quality service and technologies for our customers."

UPS’s electric automobile can accommodate up to two persons and reaches a maximum speed of 20 kilometers per hour. It has a loading capacity of 1,400 Kgs., a 36 Volt engine, an EZ-GO Chassis, and a customized bodywork designed by UPS’s engineering department.

Based in Atlanta, Georgia, UPS is the world’s largest express delivery company and serves more than 200 countries and territories. With 359,000 employees, the company reported in 2000 revenues of US$ 29.8 billion, operating a volume of 13.6 million packages a day. The same year, UPS was chosen for the third consecutive year as the "World’s Most Admired Mail, Package and Freight Delivery Company" in a Fortune magazine survey.
