UPS Helps Establish Volunteer Program At Canada's Largest Food Bank
MISSISSAUGA, ON, October 17, 2006 - With the help of 45 UPS Canada employees in Montréal and a $45,000 donation from the UPS Community Investment Grant, Moisson Montréal is one step closer to establishing its much needed volunteer recruitment program.
The grant will enable Canada's largest food bank to develop a program called "I get involved in Moisson Montréal", which will help to increase the organization's permanent volunteer database. In 2005-2006, Moisson Montréal fed 130,000 people per month and distributed 8.9 million kilos of food annually. Many of Moisson Montréal's volunteers are clients too. The volunteers in need receive food, toiletries and free bus fare to the site, a reciprocal relationship which allows them to work in a group setting, learn language skills and integrate into society.
"In 2005-2006, Moisson Montréal benefited from the exceptional commitment of 1,400 occasional volunteers and 50 regular volunteers," said Johanne Théroux, Executive Director, Moisson Montréal. "In hourly terms, this valuable assistance was equivalent to the work of 28 employees! The generous UPS contribution will allow us to leverage our greatest asset - our volunteers."
The UPS Community Investment Grant highlights the company's philosophy of striking a balance between financial contributions and promoting community involvement. When a UPS employee (and/or family) donates a minimum of 120 volunteer hours, that organization becomes eligible for grant consideration under the Community Investment Grant Program.
In 2005, The UPS Foundation distributed nearly US $43.8 million worldwide through grants that benefit organizations or programs such as Moisson Montréal and provide support for building stronger communities.
UPS employees in Montreal will kick off UPS Global Volunteer Week by sorting food and assembling food baskets at the food bank. This volunteer activity is part of the fourth Annual UPS Global Volunteer week, a celebration of UPS community involvement around the world.
"Through volunteer efforts, our Montréal UPS team was able to experience first hand what Moisson Montréal means to the local community and what it specifically needs beyond our physical help," said Dan Shea, Vice President of Human Resources, UPS Canada. "This is a great example of how the 100,000 volunteer hours that will be completed by UPS employees around the world this week can make a difference."
