UPS Employee Volunteerism Strong During the Holiday Season
MISSISSAUGA, Nov. 29, 2006 - Even during UPS's busiest time of year, its employees from coast-to-coast are putting on their brown Santa hats to deliver holiday cheer to those in need.
One of those employees is UPS Canada Calgary Operations Supervisor Ken Schulte, who assists in running The Calgary Sun and Salvation Army's 'Adopt-A-Family' program from November 1 to December 16. Ken is one of 60 UPS employees helping over 200 local Calgary families have a happier holiday.
UPS Canada employees will sort through thousands of gifts in the Calgary operations two weeks before Christmas for the 'Adopt-A-Family' program. For the 12th year, UPS Canada employees will hit the road and deliver gifts, making wishes come true for less fortunate families in the community.
"Because UPS operates in communities across the country, our employees in Canada are uniquely positioned to recognize the issues and organizations in need of support," said Dan Shea, UPS Canada vice president of Human Resources. "UPS employees commit time to volunteer activities throughout the year, but their goodwill efforts peak during the holiday season when families and individuals need it most."
UPS Canada encourages employees to organize volunteer groups and bring forward suggestions for charities in their communities that require assistance or grants. Some examples of how UPS Canada employees are demonstrating their holiday spirit this year through volunteerism include:
Ontario:
- In Barrie, UPS Canada employees take part in 'Operation Christmas Child', a community program that collects shoe boxes filled with toys, school supplies and personal hygiene items for children in 92 countries. In 2005, Barrie Service Providers loaded two tractor trailers containing more than 8,000 shoe boxes and delivered them to an 'Operation Christmas Child' warehouse.
- In Toronto, UPS Canada employees will work with local community organizations to 'adopt' single-parent, low-income families. UPS employees purchase gifts for both the parent and the children, to ensure a joyful holiday. In 2005, UPS employees provided one excited needy family with a new computer, to go along with their holiday toys.
Quebec:
- In Montreal, UPS Canada Customer Service Centre employees will participate in the third-annual 'Montreal Elf Project' to collect toys and food for local United Way/Centraide agencies. Employees, like Santa's helpers, buy, wrap and deliver gifts to the family. In 2005, over 220 gifts were delivered to Montreal children.
British Columbia:
- In Vancouver, UPS Canada employees will donate toys, food and clothing to low-income families with young children. The gifts are wrapped, marked from "Santa" and given to the families in time for the holidays.
New Brunswick:
- In Moncton, UPS Canada Accounting employees will sort through collected gifts for 'Operation Christmas Child' program, which distributes gifts to less-fortunate children around the world. Customer Service Centre employees will participate in a food drive to support a local food bank with non-perishables as well as mittens, scarves and hats. Employees will also donate turkeys to a local drive that provides Christmas dinners for needy families.
- In Fredericton, UPS Canada Brokerage employees will aid the 'Christmas Angels' program run by a local food bank. UPS Canada employees will purchase new, unwrapped toys and knit hats, scarves and mittens for the food bank's clients.
Manitoba:
- For the sixth year, UPS Canada Winnipeg employees will help collect gently-used winter outerwear from October to January for Winnipeg families as part of the Koats for Kids program. In 2005, UPS Canada helped to transport 5,427 coats collected by the program to Manitoba families in need of warmth.
