Toronto Student Selected To Receive UPS Scholarship
MISSISSAUGA, ON, August 21, 2007 - Stephanie Ross, an 18 year-old Etobicoke student, is on her way to Carlton University this year with the help of the four-year James E. Casey scholarship from UPS. Named after UPS's founder, this scholarship is valued at $16,000. The daughter of UPS Brampton Centre Driver Glenn Ross -- who has been employed at UPS Canada for over 25 years -- Stephanie was the only Canadian recipient to receive the award this year, which is open to children of full-time UPS employees who plan to pursue an undergraduate degree.
"I'm very thankful to UPS for awarding me this scholarship," said Stephanie after receiving the award. "Having this level of financial support will make it easier for me to focus on my education. It's so important that companies like UPS help students like me pursue our career goals."
President of UPS Canada Mike Tierney, President of UPS Americas Steve Flowers and President of UPS International Alan Gershenhorn presented a scholarship plaque to Stephanie and her family at UPS's Centennial celebration event in Toronto last month.
"The James E. Casey Scholarship is really an investment in our community's future," said Mike Tierney. "Through this program, we're able to assist students in attaining their academic goals, while ultimately enhancing the skills and learning of future leaders and professionals."
Stephanie was selected based on her outstanding academic achievements, participation in extracurricular activities and leadership in the community. In high school at Silverthorn Collegiate Institute, she kept busy as a member of the Student Athletic Association and Prefects Club, which organizes volunteer activities for students in the community. Outside of school, Stephanie volunteers with Boy Scouts of Canada, organizing games and crafts. Her goal is to become a Chartered Accountant.
