Walk to Cure Diabetes raises over $46,000 in Fredericton
Press Release

UPS Canada 'delivers' over 75% of total proceeds

May 29, 2005 - Fredericton, NB - The 2005 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes raised over $46,000 for Diabetes research. Thirty-eight teams participated in the Fredericton Walk, one of 60 planned across the country.

This year's top "walker" and contributor was UPS Canada, raising a total of $35,000. UPS had 20 teams and over 200 employees involved in this year's Walk.

"I'm very proud of our employees in Fredericton," says UPS Canada Vice-President of Customs Brokerage and JDRF Corporate Recruitment Chair, Lisa Paré. "Their commitment to finding a cure for Juvenile Diabetes has been translated into overwhelming action."

In addition to their fundraising efforts and significant participation in the walk, UPS employees also coordinated the entire fundraising event, from: recruiting teams, to managing all Walk logistics, to finding sponsors to promoting the event. Over 50 UPS employees were involved in the coordination of the event.

"This is truly a unique situation," says JDRF Manager of Fundraising and Development, Mary-Catherine LeVatte. "We have a lot of corporations who support this event but I can honestly say that I've never seen one raise over 75% of a Walk's funds while also organizing the entire event."

About the Walk to Cure Diabetes

The Walk to Cure Diabetes is Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's premier fundraising event. This program provides an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about juvenile (Type 1) diabetes, raise much needed funds to continue essential JDRF funded research programs and is a great way for corporations and families to get out for a day of fun and fitness.

The Walk is the fastest growing fundraising event in the history of JDRF and is the fastest growing Walk in the world. Each year more than 45,000 people across Canada Walk to Cure Diabetes - including representatives from more than 600 corporations, local companies and families. Walkers raise funds by asking friends, relatives, co-workers and suppliers to pledge them for participating. Since its inception the Walk has raised over $42 million for research, with $6.7 million in 2004 alone.

About JDRF

Founded in 1974, JDRF has contributed more than $900 million to diabetes research. They have become a foundation where scientists worldwide learn from one another and use that knowledge to strive towards one goal - finding a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Because of the many fundraising initiatives of JDRF, scientists have never been closer to finding a cure. The Walk to Cure Diabetes is an essential part of the fundraising effort. And a great way to let people everywhere learn more about the seriousness of diabetes and the need to find a cure.
