Employees volunteer with over 100 agencies to build stronger communities
Mississauga, ON, April 24, 2008 - For UPS Canada
employees, Canada's National Volunteer Week (April 27-May 3) is more than just a
week - it's a year-long event. Each year, brown sleeves get rolled up as
employees donate their time for various volunteer activities across Canada.
In 2007, UPS Canada employees reported more than 20,000 hours throughout the
year - the equivalent of nearly two and a half years of time - to more than 100
charitable organizations across Canada.
"For many years, UPS has encouraged employees to volunteer and has made it
part of its mission to help employees understand the impact of their
contributions," said UPS Canada Community Relations Manager Doug Appleby. "Over
the years, UPS Canada employees around the globe have made it a personal
responsibility to get involved - to help add value to the quality of life for
members in their communities. Volunteering has become second nature."
In 2007, UPS Canada partnered with over 100 agencies to foster change and
build stronger communities. Some gave their time to assist in construction
projects, while others volunteered at neighbourhood food banks and soup
kitchens. While several organizations received monetary donations from UPS,
employees are well-known for providing hands-on assistance to help better the
communities where they live and work.
UPS Canada employees volunteered their time at many charitable agencies
across Canada in 2007, including:
- Alzheimer's Society
- Boys & Girls Clubs
- Breast Cancer Society
- Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB)
- Habitat for Humanity
- Literacy Council
- Meals on Wheels
- Moisson Montreal
- Moncton Headstart
- Scouts Canada
- Surrey Food Bank
- United Way
- YMCA
UPS has traditionally provided employees volunteer opportunities through its
annual Global Volunteer Week each October, an extension of the company's
long-standing commitment to volunteerism. This year, the week-long event will be
extended into a month-long event for the entire month of October, celebrating
volunteer work performed throughout the year and the lasting impact it has on
employees' communities. UPS employees in more than 200 countries will
synchronize their efforts, donating their time to a wide range of activities
including repairing schools, reading to children, assisting at food banks and
landscaping for local organizations.
Since its founding in 1907, UPS has built a legacy as a caring and
responsible corporate citizen. Whether through it's involvement with United Way,
The UPS Foundation or volunteerism, UPS provides assistance to programs that
address social and community issues through skilled volunteerism that promotes
sustainable programs that address diversity, non-profit effectiveness, the
environment, community safety, economic and global literacy.
